...erm... just getting back to my shovel for a moment *pause to shake off accumulated wildlife* I'm beginning to think it disappeared at the same time my garden refuse reappeared in the form of a barricade outside my gate... instead of as a topping in a "half full skip round the corner".

Yes :\ I could be doing someone an injustice saying that, but as it would be the same person who found I have a "really quite stupid" button in the middle of my face whilst coping with one of the people who created it, and for which I paid for the privilege of having it pressed some fourteen hours before I opened my gate and found I couldn't get out of it until I'd returned the huge pile to where I'd originally put it, I don't actually care because its absence is just adding insult to injury now.

edit: I thought you'd all like a long sentence to contrast against the much shorter ones

You're welcome :)

You actually get

"Forbidden

And likewise "You don't have permission to access /forum_index.php on this server." - whatever page you try to access is reported back in the error message.

It started about 03:45 Berkeley time: this site is still up, and there's no sign of any planned outage on the IST page. So I'm guessing it's a breakage, not planned maintenance.

I believe that SETI has more servers than we're familiar with on the SSP, and one of the back-office ones has responsibility for managing the access levels for different classes of user to the rest of the farm. Hopefully, it's just this 'access control' server which has gone down, which reduces the work that will be needed to get everything back up again (perhaps just a simple reboot). I can't think of any other scenario which would deny access to the web server, the upload handler, and the scheduler all at the same time in the early hours of the morning.

Unless ET is getting p***ed off at having her privacy invaded?

Apache web server, where is my filesystem? I can't read my config files. Until I can read my config files deny all access.

SSH server, where is my filesystem .... now I can't be rebooted without a trip to the colo and you might as well bring along a spare drive and the backup with that page of paper with the magic settings.

I think we are down for a standing 8 count.

...and the trip to the colo isn't going to happen until someone crawls out of bed and dons some "decent" clothes (as opposed to going there in their birthday suit)

Just for informational purposes, I just got a response from Eric about the outage.

He says.....
We did a kernel update yesterday on the file server that contains the boincadm account and the SETI@home web pages. It looks like that server has crashed. Jeff is on his way to the data center to diagnose.

From the kitty news network.....
