Perhaps the good Dr. should do his web code tinkering here before foisting it on actual projects like Seti.

He wouldn't get the feedback nearly so quickly. Nothing like a rampant SETI crowd to give him a brown-trouser day - and at least one of the fixes is working here now, where we needed it.

Added to that, the web- and forum code that we have on here is minute, compared to that of an actual project like Seti.

Interesting feedback from David. I don't think this was a deliberately-planned exercise, but I think it's had beneficial spin-offs.

BTW, I enabled some PHP flags that show warning and error messages
in the page itself, rather than the Apache error log where it never gets looked at.
This is revealing a number of long-standing problems.

It does. It means that everyone now knows they are free to attack PHP and Apache on Boinc because no human ever looks at the error log. Good Job DA!

It just doesn't seem a good idea to me to tinker with Boinc code at 11pm at night after a long day in the office. Mistakes are bound to be made, which won't be dealt with for 12 hours. But if the perpetrator can't or won't be stopped from continually doing it, then the only sensible solution is for a deputy to have a spare set of keys to put it right sooner.

Nobody is any doubt whatsoever that these faults and glitches get fixed ASAP when they are flagged up, and there is no real harm to posters or their crunching at any time, apart from the irritation factor. But, Seti is a worldwide project with worldwide attention, so the question has to be asked "Is it good PR for the project to have this happening?". Especially at this time of year when there is likely to be an official fund raising drive?

That is my main concern, not to demonise one particular person, but to avoid people thinking, well if it's run in such a lackadaisical way, do I feel want to donate to it?

11:00 PM Berkeley. What shift does the good professor have? You do see that the SSL isn't his only job. And what better time to do it. Mostly the Pacific Ocean is posting at that hour so the web server is under little stress. Oh and just what hours do astronomers keep anyway?

The only irritation is his shift ended before the continent woke up and he didn't put the toolbox away before he left for the night.
