I have been trying to install the latest version of boinc. I got the dreaded 2718 missing package name error, so I tried installing an older version of boinc, only to have that not work either. I finally ran the microsoft installer repair utility, and now I am getting this new error code 1714. I have removed boinc, it does not show up in the list of programs, and I have removed the directories from the program files and program data directories. But I still get this error. Any help greatly appreciated, as boinc is not working at all now. cedevans@bellsouth.net |

OK - I was finally able to get this resolved - to a point anyway. I am back to version 6.12.34. But when I try to update from here - initially, I was at 7.0.25 - I get the stupid 2718 error. I get it that the msi problem is a microsoft issue and not a boinc issue, but is there some way to update without this always happening ? cedevans@bellsouth.net |

Sorry, I missed that you had error 2718 as well. This means that the installer is corrupt. You need to download the 7.0.28 installer again and preferably save it to another place than you did before. Or if you need to save it to the same place, make sure the one in cache is removed. You can do that by cleaning out your temporary internet files. |

OK - thanks for the suggested fixes, but they did not work. FYI - I am running Win 7 64-bit, in case that matters. The issue is on my laptop, at Toshiba. I have 7.0.28 up and running on my desktop computer just fine. So I copied that set-up program from the desktop to a CD, then took the CD to my desktop, and attempted to install 7.0.28 from the CD to my laptop. I get the 2718 error, even though I am using a version that did work just fine on my desktop. What should I try next ? cedevans@bellsouth.net |

Out of the FAQ I pointed you to, which of the steps did you follow? |

To be honest, I cannot tell you all that I tried. I did several of the operations you listed, but some were not applicable in my instance. In any event, I have a stable 6.12.34 running. I have tried several ways to install 7.0.28, once from a CD from my desktop with a version of 7.0.28 that I downloaded on that computer. Then I tried using IE (I typically use Firefox) to download and install from a different location on my laptop. It also gives the 1714 error. I tried to install the MSUI utility, that you point to, but it does not do anything except try (and succeed) to install Babylon on my laptop. I got the Babylon off, but the utility just runs and says completed and does not do anything else - does not report or anything, just quits and goes away. cedevans@bellsouth.net |

You may want to try the other installation fixer on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2438651 (from the Fix It box). |
