Message 44231 - Posted: 21 May 2012, 17:19:07 UTC

I installed BOINC on two home computers; Under XP there is an icon in the launch-bar which when clicked accesses BOINC manager.
On Ubuntu Linux however there is no indication that either the client or manager is running. Is there anything that can be installed as an indicator in a GNOME 3 panel?

Many thanks,
Mike

Actually, on my Ubuntu there is, even a snooze option that goes with it. 6.12.33 and 7.0.24 and up. Don't know about other/earlier versions. Snooze changes the icon, BM not connected to a client changes the icon... it's operational.

edit: Mind you, I've added the "Classic Systray Extension" in amongst a raft of about a dozen GNOME-Shell extensions of v 3.4 on Ubuntu 12.04, but disabling that, still lets the BM icon show in the main info bar up top.

1. Did you install BOINC using Synaptic?
2. Looked for "Classic systray extension" (keywords together and separately) but found nothing that looked right. Do yo have a non-standard repository defined?

Thanks for your help,
Mike

On reflection, with the persistent LiveCD install to a USB thumbdrive and selecting the GNOME session [3.2], with BOINC 7.0.24 out of the Ubuntu Software Centre, there's the BM icon right at top. The logic escapes me, but at times an application icon will appear right bottom on the [whatever that slide out bar is called].

Extensions came from the ppa at http://ppa.launchpad.net/webupd8team/gnome3/ubuntu which holds about 2 dozen of these handy add-ons to GNOME 3. Then I use the GNOME-Tweak-Tool aka Advanced Settings, to set these on and off. Explicitly, only this tool from the ricotz test ppa I use as the rest will cause incompatibility issues with quite a few extensions.

But, far as I can see and remember, the 6.12 and 7.0 have a ready to go 'systray' type icon, that work in 11.10 and 12.04 GNOME. In Unity, the DASH bar keeps the icons of active GUI apps.

I have the BOINC icon in my system tray when BOINC manager is running. I use KDE but I am fairly certain the same idea applies to gnome. The trick is you need to have BOINC manager added to the Application Launcher and you have to have the item on the launcher associated with the BOINC icon which can be found in the BOINC data directory. Installing from repository via Synaptic sets all that up for you.

If you run T4T and cannot install from repo, there is very likely a way for you to add BOINC manager and its icon to the App Launcher manually. I can do it on KDE and I imagine gnome has that ability too. There other options as well.

I can add a BOINC luncher to the panel; However I am looking for something similar to the Indicator applet. I installed BOINC, BOINC-manager and BOINC-client using Synaptic, but got no indicator icon. Perhaps there just isn't one.

Also: What is T4T?

Thanks again,

Mike

T4T (Testing for Tachyons], just made that up, is from CERN and runs in a VM.

Frankly, no idea what the problem is why you're not getting any icon, top or bottom, in Ubuntu GNOME 3.x when the BOINC Manager is loaded, and for sure I've not defined a launcher for the BM... using HUD (intelligently remembers what you want on first character typed] or DASH...

I can second this;

When Boinc is installed via command line (apt), I get no systray icon or indicator in Unity. (ubuntu 12.04)

I just add the boincmgr launcher to the launcher panel. But this doesn't give the functionality of an indicator icon...

I see talk here about Gnome and KDE desktops, however standard Ubuntu 12.04 has neither... It has Unity. (EDIT: OP uses Gnome3, however I'm still curious about this and will keep my eyes open)

Don't know what is wrong with your install [from Synaptic]. Here's a bigpicture screenshot of Gnome 12.04. See right hand bottom corner, the bar when the mouse is moved there. That icon ain't there when the BM is not loaded. Right click on it and a menu appears with Open BM, Snooze, About BM, Exit. Note also the BOINCTasks icon [running in Wine]. On my 11.10 system, these 2 icons appear right top. In short, the BM is enabled on Linux and don't know what special thing I would have done to get it to show. To test, I disabled all Gnome extensions, and the bar right bottom still pops up when the mouse is moved there or the Superkey aka Windows Key is operated, with the BM icon, when the BM is loaded.
