Since the BOINC software update for MacOS X yesterday, my CPU is very hot even at 25% usage. Before I could set the usage up to 50% and there was nearly no fan action. But now the fans are running at 6200rpm, which seems to be their maximum, and the CPU temperature goes up to 90°C.

A BOINC upgrade won't automatically heat up your CPU more than a previous BOINC did, since BOINC does not do any of the work, but the project science applications do all the work, and thus heat up your CPU.
So either a preference setting got reset (e.g. Use at most X% CPU time), or you are using local preferences which override the same web-preferences, or you did something else with the computer.

Have you ever tried cleaning the inside of that Mac, get the dust-bunnies out? As that's normally what's causing all this excessive heat. If this is a laptop, you may want to add cooling in the form of a laptop cooler, which are available in all sorts and for all kinds of prices. Or just not run BOINC on a laptop. Or not run specific projects on it. Some projects generate more heat than others.

Yes it's true, that it is not the BOINC client itself, but something changed, which led to a higher CPU temperature. It is not one of the CPU settings, it's not another program (none are opened, except BOINC), and I'm sure there are no new workunits, except collatz3.06 (opencl_osx). But even this workunit doesn't seem to be the reason for this high temperature, because when I disable the GPU usage the temperature doesn't change. Anyway could you please tell me what workunits or projects generate more heat than others.

I find that Primegrid and Einstein generate a lot more heat than Seti and Malariacontroldotnet. The latter generates the least heat of all.

I haven't checked amongst all projects yet, might be something to do when next I get bored. ;-)

Instead of your point of view I discovered that the Seti@home application AstroPulse seems to be a much heat generating application.

My Sony VAIO cpu/gpu temps started rising, over the last few months. Not determining a hardware cause (computer fan running ok, two ext. fans, also ok), and after blowing out the dust, I decided to download TThrottle, rev. 5.10.

Voila' An approx. 20deg. C drop in recorded cpu junction temps. Have not dug into the history of TThrottle pblms. (my rev. was one of the original ones, until upgrade), and so don't know what went wrong with the temp. recordings, during the intervening years.

Good luck, anyway; especially, with any new download of TThrottle.
