Is there a bug in this version of BOINC, in that it assumes the system default is for more files?

I did forward it to the developer, however, do know that 6.12 is deprecated, it won't be added to anymore, no matter how big any potentially found bug is.
I did forward it in case this thing is something that may be in the 7.0 client as well and needs to be fixed from thereon in.

Any answers I get I'll put back here.

Hi Jord,

This was fixed in 6.12.41, and is also in 7.0.x:
Thread at Milkyway forums.

There were _many_ Mac bugs in 6.12.35 which were fixed in later versions of the 6.12. series, but they were never made a public release because of the push to get out 7.0.x. Unfortunately, that took much longer than we had hoped.

All Intel Mac users should upgrade to 7.0.25.

Cheers,
--Charlie

All Intel Mac users should upgrade to 7.0.25.

I've been running BOINC 6.12.35 (standard GUI) successfully on an off-the-shelf 24" iMac9,1 (MB419LL/A) for quite some time, using a Swedish language version of OS X Lion 10.7.3 with all of Apple's updates + CUDA Driver 4.2.7. No problem there. One admin account only, no standard user accounts.

Today I've tried to update to BOINC 7.0.25 (again standard GUI) at least 10-12 times, but it's a no go. After double-clicking the installer its icon starts jumping up and down in the Dock for about 90 seconds, but then the installer stops dead in its tracks. I never see any window or message during any part of the (supposed) installation procedure, nor after it has failed. Verifying the hard drive's integrity and repairing disk permissions with Disk Utility doesn't help, nor does zapping the PRAM or starting up using Safe Boot (without running the installer until after a normal restart). I don't think the installer's file as such is corrupt - at least not in all of my attempts, since I've downloaded the official .dmg file from the BOINC main site three times, using different web browsers.

For comparison, today I also updated BOINC on an old AMD Athlon II X4 920 machine running a 64-bit Swedish version of Windows 7 Home Premium. I upgraded from 6.12.34 to 7.0.25 without any problem. It would be nice to be able to update BOINC on the iMac as well, since it's quite a lot better at crunching numbers than the Win 7 machine.

Thank you Tommy, I forwarded your problem to the Mac developer. I'm sure he'll be along today to give help or ask more details.

I've gotten several answers from the developer, which I'll summarize here:
Corrupted downloads do occur so you might download a fresh copy and try again. By the way, the installers are not downloaded as .dmg files; they are .zip.

Upgrading from 6.12.35 does take several minutes. The very first sentence in the ReadMe file (only in English, I'm afraid) and written in bold type is:
> Installing BOINC may take several minutes; please be patient.

So have you tried just clicking the installer ONCE and then waiting it out?

I am seeing the same problem. The installer icon bounces in the dock for more than a minute before stopping, and disappears when I click on it. I I have the downloaded boinc_7.0.25_macOSX_i686.zip several times without success.

If I may, when it is bouncing in the dock the system is attempting to start the application. It stops when the first window opens or the system is unable to start the application, about 60-90 seconds.

I'm wondering if it is a permission issue. I installed 7.0.25 with no issue, but did so from an administrator's account. Perhaps the installer isn't launching correctly from a non privileged account?

May need to go into the console and look at the log files to see if a crash report was generated.

I think I may have found the solution. The culprit in my case appears to be the UnArchiver utility. I was trying to install another application and ended up with the bouncing icon in the dock. Searching the error led me to this link:

http://code.google.com/p/theunarchiver/issues/detail?id=464

I then switched to the built-in Archive Utility and managed to install the application. I then tried this on the BOINC 7.0.25 zip and this time I get the installer icon which doesn't bounce. I am waiting for the outstanding tasks in 6.12.35 to complete before I give this a try.

Just to update that I have successfully intalled 7.0.25. Due to Lion's sandboxing, UnArchiver doesn't extract the distribution correctly. Need to use Lion's built-in Archive Utility.
