I had been running boinc_6.12.34_windows_x86_64.exe without any trouble since I bought a new computer. But recently something happened (I wish I could remember what) that caused me to decide to uninstall then reinstall BOINC. But it wouldn't uninstall, so I made the bold decision to delete the BOINC Program Files and Program Data, and delete all references to BOINC in regedit. I was hoping that a utility called Reimage Repair (it really is a unique and wonderous utility that scans for viruses and malware, eliminates them, then replaces missing and corrupt system files with new ones from their repository) would save me, as it has done a couple of times in the past.

Apparently it did not. My computer seems to be running fine, but:
boinc_6.12.34_windows_x86_64.exe: As boinc.msi was being decompressed, it abrupty stopped and an ERROR baloon appeared which stated, "The configuration data for this product is corrupt. Contact your support personnel."

boinc_6.10.60_windows_x86_64.exe and boinc_6.12.34_windows_intelx86.exe: When I tried to install these the install almost finished before a window labeled BOINC Installer Information yielded the following text: "Error 1714; The older version of BOINC cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group."

So, I am asking computer programers, software developers, and especially any and all BOINC experts for their suggestions and recommendations. You have my really big TIA.

Thanks very much for the link. I will look at it this afternoon (time being a problem this morning).

Cheers,
Steve

Well, Gundolf, I gave it my best shot, going through steps 1-6, but without success. I can not find any trace of BOINC anywhere. I'm a little confused about running Find in regedit for *.msi, and not getting any returns at all. First I tried BOINC.msi, and got nothing before I tried *.msi. Every other program I've installed has an installer file, but where does the registry put them? It seems nobody knows. ["...Windows 7 Home does not have the Local Security Policy. It may be possible that you can remove the entries the installer made from the registry, but it's at this point unknown where it puts these entries in the registry. (The developers haven't come back to me about this, so I really don't know what the installer does with those entries. Perhaps it silently drops them)."]

In Step 3 I clicked on these steps, since they apply to BOINC 6.x.x, and I followed all five sub-Steps, before returning to Step 4 of the main menu. I'm confused by Step 7, also. I downloaded boinc_5.10.45_windows_intelx86.exe to c:\BOINC_temp. If I start to execute boinc_5.10.45_windows_intelx86.exe /a, the installer states, 'The InstallShield Wizard will create a server version of BOINC at a specified network location. To continue, click Next.' However, if I execute boinc_5.10.45_windows_intelx86.exe, without the /a, the installer states, 'The InstallShield Wizard will install BOINC on your computer.' And this it did. So now I have v.5.10.34 installed to c:\Program Files (x86). Why would I want a server version of BOINC? And although I have a 4-port router, I only have one computer currently, so there really isn't a network.

Additionally, the 2nd line from the end of Step 7 states, "The Program Files directory (under the c:\BOINC_temp directory) contains a sub-directory called BOINC. Copy this complete folder (or the contents of it) to your own BOINC directory. Click Yes to overwrite, or Overwrite all." I wasn't able to carry this out, since I didn't have a BOINC directory under c:\Program Files (x86). I've done everything I could to remove all traces of BOINC. So I recreated a new BOINC folder under c:\Program Files (x86), and was able to install v.5.10.45 to it. Am I now stuck using an old 32-bit program with no GPU? I still want to end up with v.6.12.34 64-bit, which would be installed into c:\Program Files, but I don't know how I would get from Point A to Point B. Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Steve

Similar issues here...help please?

I had the
"C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations\{DF85BFC4-9509-4AA9-824A-5C6057FA8459}\BOINC.msi cannot be found"
problem initially when downloading the new 64-bit version. This was at the second attempt as the first one seemed to result in the download hanging.

I removed the old program (unfortunately I didn't find this help page until too late I checked out the Seti forums) and I find I am now unable to install any version successfully and really, really do not want to tangle with the registry.

Is there anything I can do to install an older BOINC which will upgrade successfully?

I tried with a 6.13 version according to the FAQ sheet and got the same problem of the msi message. Is there an older version that will let me upload, it, do you know?

No older version will work, until you fixed the Windows problem of it misplacing where it put the old MSI file. This isn't a BOINC problem, but purely a Windows-lost-track-of-where-it-itself-put-this-file problem.

If you want to remove the registry entry, then you first have to figure out which BOINC.MSI file is the last one on the system , as that's the only file that Windows keeps track of in the registry.

Then that one will live at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\
HKEY_USERS\[long and difficult number]\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products\

Or just search for BOINC in the registry. If you do, leave the following keys well alone:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley

These are the main entries for the BOINC program and data directory and removing these will not fix any problems you have with the Windows installer.

Hello!

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable"

This is my solution to this strange problem...
Working under W7 Ultimate 32bit.

Step 1:
Download the setup file of your last working BOINC version and execute it.

Step 2:
After the message box "extracting the file boinc.msi" has vanished, cancel this setup.

Step 3:
Execute the actual boinc setup, now it should work...

The BOINC setup looks for the last setup file, in my case:
C:\Windows\Downloaded Installations\{965A73E0-52CF-4080-8C56-0A665AEDDF53}\boinc.msi
If this file has been deleted by any reasons the setup will show the error message below.
