I was running version 6.12.34 on Windows Server 2008R2 (not a DC) as a service for about a month without any issues. I decided to move the program data location to another folder and decided the best way would be to un-install it and re-install to another folder.

However when I try to re-install it I get the error "failed to change the password of the boinc_master account" and then dies. I removed all trace of Boinc on this server including removing all registry entries. There is no account "boinc_master" in the Local User users of this server, so I don't know where it is finding this account since it was removed during the un-install process.

I even tried using version 6.12.43 which I found on this forum with the same result.

Its running but not us a sevice which is a pain.

Any help would be appreciated.

Uninstalling BOINC does not remove:
- The accounts it made for itself.
- The data directory.
- The registry entries at HKLM, HKCU and HKU.

It only removes its own program files in the \Program Files\ directory.

Now, while your Windows version may not be installed as a DC, you may have updated it so much that by now it may be recognized as being one, by programs including the BOINC installer program (which is really an MSI).

Anyway, check for accounts using an administrator run command line and the net localgroup and net users commands.

I know from previous un-installs that it does not remove created acounts or registry entries. I did that myself after the first time the re-install failed. This is a recently bilt system that has never been a DC.

Here is the output from the commands that you suggested I run and there is no sign of any Boinc users and only shows the groups created by the boinc installer.

Still not sure why the installer thinks that there is a boinc_master account that thinks its password needs to be reset.
