Today I installed the software for WCGrid, just another project I thought i'll see how this goes? To my horror my BOINC manager is now "World Community Grid - BOINC Manger". In the tasks tab all the all the colums have been rearanged in a ass about face way. Now the percentage done is 4th last & Status is last. Just to rub salt into the wound if you now click the Help menu & click about you get "World Community Grid - BOINC Manger" and the only link in the about box goes to, you guessed it IBM world community Grid web page none to this site. Also in the help menu these are your only options. 1. World Community Grid Help 2. World Community Grid - BOINC Manager 3. World Community Grid - Website 4. About World Community Grid - BOINC Manager. If thats not bad enough both the task bar & system tray icons are of WCGrid not the fimilar BOINC icon. I have absolutly nothing against WCGrid, but I thought they where just one of a dozen of more projects, I didnt realize there the new owner.
Please tell me i have an anomally & this hasn't happened to everyone who now installs WCGrid. Is it just me? How do it get my old BOINC back. If i'm missing something I appologise....Any thoughts

World Community Grid have their own version of BOINC and BOINC Manager, that you can download from their site. It's essentially the same as normal BOINC, or even PtP BOINC (Intel's BOINC), just that the name and help is different.

To get 'old BOINC' back, you will have to uninstall the WCG BOINC version and install BOINC downloaded from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php. Mind, most of the columns are changed in 6.12 as well. But at least it'll be called BOINC by Berkeley.

Hi all & thanks the replies. I didn't really think that BOINC had been bought, I was just trying to get my point of view over(errr.. minor rant). I still think that major changes to our favourite app by third parties should at least be spelled out in advance, but hey what do I now? I just crunch here :-)

By assertion from WCG, yes rant, as the WCG kit just comes with a WCG skin and a change to the cc_config.xml so it checks with WCG for a new [audited] client version and also goes to see if the IBM network is up instead of Google [who were down for a while some days ago, whilst IBM/WCG's was up]. You can flip the skin back to standard BOINC any time you like. Mine actually runs with the BOINC Italy skin and tray button.

WCG BOINC acts identical, and yes when you select WCG in the projects tab, you see only WCG going buttons. Would you have attached any other project to that client and selected that project, you'd have seen theirs. In fact, if you'd *upgraded* to WCG's client, you'd still have had your other projects attached.

Why WCG has an IBM audited and approved code base of the open source set? Because there are big corporations that volunteer to the grid and would not have it otherwise. It's a very serious struggle to get at the spare CPU time of banks, corps and retail chains.]

So, thank you for choosing to contribute your space CPU cycles to science, whatever computational research you choose.
