Hi. What is the "translate" process that "bionc_project" user is running? It is using ~200%CPU and has been doing so for a couple of days. I am only running QCN (quake catcher) nothing computationally intensive. I'm running on OS X 10.6.7. |

The boinc_project user runs the science applications and graphics applications under the secure installation. What version of BOINC is that? Are you sure about the 200% CPU? I ask as normally any OS will only add up everything to 100% and not go over that, as it's (dumb) to go over 100%. So how much percent is it really showing? Which application is taking up that many cycles? It should show that as well. Have you tried a full exit & restart of BOINC? Have you tried a reboot of the system? In case it's the QCN application that's taking up the amount of cycles, have you asked at their forums why it's doing that? Is this a laptop or desktop Mac? In case of a desktop, do you have an accelerometer attached to the system? Without it, there's no use to run QCN. |

Using version 6.10.58. I have a dual-core macbook pro, so it reports out to 200% when both cores are maxed out. The user "bionc_user" (which is installed as part of BOINC installation to give limited privileges to boinc processes in the OS) was using up all of the cycles under a process called "translate" . Another strange thing, in activity monitor the "kind" column shows a "power pc" process! That's strange, my computer is intel. In any case, I have reset the project and it seems to be working now. I'll try to ask in the QCN forums to see if they know why this happened. Thanks! |

Same problem here. Seems to have happened with the latest update to BOINC Manager 6.10.58. My particulars: 17" MacBook Pro, 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (late 2007 model) 6GB RAM (unsupported hack, but I've not ever had any other problems with this) Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1 Mac OS 10.6.8 Regarding the "translate" process, Activity Monitor shows: Process Name: translate User: boinc_project CPU: varies but is gets well above the 150% level (indicating translate is using both processors) Threads: 4 Real Mem: 24.7MB Kind: PowerPC Virtual Mem: 240.3MB Interestingly clicking "Sample Process" returns an empty window. Clicking "Inspect" returns its window properly and can be supplied if required. I've restarted BOINC. I've rebooted (several times for various other reasons). Restarting BOINC solves the problem for some short (I've not measured it) period of time, but "translate" eventually comes back in its full glory. [Added info] After a BOINC restart, "translate" still shows up in Activity Monitor but is using 0.2 to 0.4% of CPU. I'm most certainly not subscribed to any project by this name. So whatever it is that "translate" does, it seems to go all CPU rogue from time to time and once there it doesn't seem to want to get back to "normal" -- whatever that is for "translate." Finally if "translate" is necessary, and being PowerPC, BOINC is going to have issues when people make the jump to Lion next month. John Nouveaux |

I have the exact same issue, except that for me it's not really an issue : it never uses more than 0.1 % of CPU (for information, on multicore / Mac OS X each core is measured 100% in the resource monitor, eg my i7 is showing a total of 800% when used at max with boinc running on all cores), and can see cumulated CPU running time is very low. I can't sample the process neither, and it also says "PowerPC", which is possible on an Intel Mac, maybe not with all versions of Mac OS X though, and should be related with very old software anyway... For information, I recently (some weeks ago) upgraded to 6.12.26 and then downgraded to 6.10.58 after experiencing serious issues with it (I think I discussed this on this forum but I can't find where). Config : iMac i7 2,8 GHz / 8 Go DDR3 / was 10.6.7 until tonight (ie I just upgraded to 10.6.8 but it started before) |

Was it here: 6.12.26 Mac BOINC as Service Broken (Message 38427)? If you click on Your account at the bottom of this page, you'll find a link to all your posts on these Message boards.
