I have just installed the newest version 6.12.26 for Win 32 and everything runs fine but I cannot change the order of the columns in the task tab. This is a minor thing but I got used to the view and would like to change it. Is that possible?

Thanks Peter, not sure why the devs have changed that but I will live with it.

I have to agree that the current layout is not working for me at all. With the older versions i had a great overvieuw of what was going on, on my machine, now it's counter infinitive to me. I have set the 6.10.60. install back again.

Why is this layout change made anyway? Maybe we then can understant why and accept it.

Message 37876 - Posted: 19 May 2011, 12:27:34 UTC - in response to Message 37875.

It was requested by a user called Loki Clock:

I request that the left-to-right order of the attribute lists be changed so that Name comes after Elapsed and Progress.

One only rarely, in my experience, needs to check the name of an active process, but one should be able to periodically check the elapsed time and progress percentage without effort. The process name field is very long, and often items distinguishable from the most significant few digits, while the elapsed time and percentages are short. The application has not enabled dragging to change the order of the fields, so the order is important. The default size of the manager requires one to scroll horizontally to see the progress bars. There is no reason the window should need to take up more space than it does at said default size. If the process name were moved past them, one would still in most cases be able to identify the process from what one can see of it without scrolling and at the same time be able to conveniently check these constantly updating attributes.

His starting post in BOINC_Dev email and all further posts going from there linked from there.

By the way, you can run the new BOINC with an older BOINC Manager.

Just copy your present boincmgr.exe to someplace safe, before you install the new version. Then after installing the new version, do not start it up, but exit the installer quietly, then copy your preserved boincmgr.exe back to the BOINC directory. Overwrite the new version.

Now start BOINC in your normal fashion.

You'll also need to copy boinc.dll to a safe place too, and restore that too, otherwise the Boinc Manager won't start,

I had to also copy boinc.dll from the older instalation, but i also forgot to not startup boinc. Works like a charm thanx for the information!

I will have a look at the threat there in more detail, but so far i see that there are good arguments to change it, im still not happy with it but thats something else ;) I see a solution in making the colums changebel by the user but ill post any futher remarks/ideas in the dev thread.

They're still there, in their own window, no less. Advanced view->Advanced->Event Log.

As to why we have notices, and to forgo me typing it all again, please see my post here.

Thanks for that. I read the post that said why the notices were there and why the order had been changed. I just find the message tab (now window) more useful. Onwards and upwards.

Anyone knows how the "older BM replacement" could be done for Mac OS X ?

Notices tab is cool, but I hate not having the messages tab. I'll stick with 6.10.xx layout for as long as possible.

Other stuff has been moved around as well. I kept starting CPU benchmarks when trying to connect to another PC. :p

I'm still a bit bemused that such an important ergonomic change (column order) can be requested by a single person... I read the interesting mail exchange on the dev list, I see David did agree with that, but I also see the last message was :

"I think that this demonstrates why it should be user defined...

Everyone has different needs/desires as to the "correct"/best order of the columns..."

I understand implementing a user defined order was too complicated for technical reasons for the moment, but too bad it was implemented "like that", I see many people not liking the new order on the Alliance Francophone forum...

Anyway I'll live with it for the moment, but I find it less natural to read.

A lot of changes to the client or the back-end or even the forums start with the request of one person. The request just has to be made visible to / seen by the developers. One such example is this one here at Seti. On its own it wouldn't have made a chance. I liked it, so I forwarded it to the developers this morning. Apparently they thought it was a good idea as well, as it's since been implemented. It can be that simple.

I agree with all of the above, but you can use BoincTasks to get a better readout. I use it to monitor BOINC on a remote PC over the LAN.

"Unfortunately" (= fortunately :D) I'm a Mac user...

There's a great tool called BoincMenuBar2 for Mac OS X but it's not a full replacement of BM (ie some functionalities are missing), and I still have to use it, especially to see tasks details...

They should have just made the columns moveable. I agree that the new format is less friendly to view your tasks in. I could do without the notices tab and have the messages tab back embedded in the client or made to be embeddable.

Thanks

I guess the user who wanted the WU names moved didn't realise he could adjust the column widths at the top.

Hate the new layout. Going back to the older version of BOINCmgr using the instructions above.

It was so much easier just to click on the Messages tab to check what was happy.

It's gone backwards in my opinion.
