Hi,

I've been using BOINC for a long time on my windows vista machine, but I just recently switched my OS to linux (mandriva 2010)

I should mention that rather than use the RPM that was suggested by Mandriva, I had to use the download provided by BOINC (6.10.58 for Linux x86). This installed locally, which is preferred really. When installed it told me to access the file ./run_manager to start the boinc manager. However it seems I can just run boincmgr (an executable in the BOINC folder).

So I have a few questions:

When I change my hostname and use run_manager in the terminal - In the background, every second, it prints "Error: Cannot get the official hostname (error 110: Connection timed out)". I presume this is because I've changed my localhost name, since when I change it back this message goes away (and is replaced by another annoying message, something like widget class `GtkPizza' has no property named `row-ending-details')

But it looks like I can just use this boincmgr executable that I mentioned. Is there anything wrong with using this?

I would prefer to use the boincmgr executable, because when I go to the terminal and use run_manager instead, I am forced to leave the terminal open to keep BOINC running.

I apologize for being a newbie (to linux as well) - the documentation I've found was just basic installation steps.

It seems to be working fine, I'm just curious if it's okay to use the boincmgr application rather than the run_manager script, and why run_manager is so mad at me for changing my hostname.

(I initially thought that run_manager is just a script that brings up boincmgr... but if that's true, it kind of annoys me that every second it's silently reporting an error with my hostname.)
