Message 34542 - Posted: 7 Sep 2010, 6:22:57 UTC

I have searched all over this board and tried following the directions for the cc_config file but still no luck. I have a Q6600 4 core proc and a GTX 470 and a 8800 GTX. I had everything working fine with the Q6600 and the 470. I added the older 8800 and now when I run the boinc client I get the following error:

9/7/2010 2:13:29 AM NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 470 (driver version 25896, CUDA version 3010, compute capability 2.0, 1248MB, 726 GFLOPS peak)
9/7/2010 2:13:29 AM NVIDIA GPU 1 (not used): GeForce 8800 GTX (driver version 25896, CUDA version 3010, compute capability 1.0, 735MB, 346 GFLOPS peak)

No matter what I try I can't get the second GPU working. I tried creating the cc_config file with the option to enable he second GPU but still no luck. I reinstalled the drivers for both nvidia cards. I reinstalled the boinc software, and it still will not work. I have the second card driving a second monitor and I can see all the settings in the nvidia control panel. The card is working fine, I just cant get the client to use it.

Can someone please help me? What am I doing wrong? I would like ti set up so the processor continues to use all 4 cores and both GPU's work.

Here is the full list of messages on start up:

When you had the cc_config.xml present, did you see any messages indicating that in the log?

Currently, there's obviously no cc_config.xml in place (at least not in the right place {data directory} ;-).

By the way, there might arise problems with using GPUs of so much differing capabilities, at least at some projects.

Gundolf

The only folder I could find is the C:\Program Files\BOINC. I didn't see any dir in there called data. Where is the data dir in windows 7 64x?

EDIT:

If I go into advanced and choose "read config" I see something different at the bottom. Does this mean it can read the config? Maybe it just is not reading it on the start up, only when forced.

The Bold text is where the Boinc Data directory is, it will be hidden, so you'll have to unhide it.

Or just navigate there:

Windows Explorer ->C: drive ->click address bar->fill in C:\programdata\boinc ->press Enter.

Yes, that's the way to read in a modified config file, and no, you didn't read in one, as the manager only shows the default setting, which is used with an empty or non-existing cc_config.xml.

OK. I think I got the config file working, but now I can't attach to SETI do download new files. I keep getting "Communication deferred" errors over and over. But at least it looks like it is using both GPU's. Any thoughts why I can't connect to download new work files?

Add the following in a cc_config.xml (use Notepad) in the Boinc data directory:

<cc_config>
<log_flags>
</log_flags>
<options>
<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
</options>
</cc_config>

Save the changes, preferably using ANSI encoding.
Re-reading this configuration file will do no effect. This is because most GPU detections and decisions happen at the start of BOINC (only detecting whether or not Windows remote desktop is being used and the <exclusive_gpu_app> detection will happen during the running of BOINC).

So you will need to fully exit BOINC (BOINC Manager->Advanced view->File->Exit->check "Stop running science applications when exiting the Manager"->OK). Check with Windows Task Manager->Processes if boinc.exe has really stopped running (you can leave boinctray.exe running, this is the idle detection program). Then restart BOINC (Start->All programs->BOINC->BOINC Manager). This will read in the configuration file and use it.

Seti is off line during Tuesday 9am Berkeley time and Friday 9am Berkeley time.

I updated the file and did a full reboot and it still will not communicate with SETI and download any work. (But it see's both GPUs so that's a good thing :) Do you know how long they stay offline for? Maybe that is still the problem. Here again is my log file:

Do you know how long they stay offline for?

Seti is off line during Tuesday 9am Berkeley time to Friday 9am Berkeley time.

Seti home page says:
Weekly Outage and Initial Catch Up
Every Tuesday morning (Pacific time) we begin a 3 day data distribution outage to focus on science processing and development plus any needed systems maintenance. The upload/download servers will be offline during this time. The web site (including the forums) will only be offline during the database maintenance and backup portion of the outage. On Friday, you may experience connectivity issues as the servers catch up with demand.

Well, it looks like I won't be able to work on any SETI stuff until their servers are back up. In the precess of trying to fix the GPU issue and after doing the reinstall I must have deleted any projects/data I had stored on my machine. I guess I'll work on another project until their servers are back up on Friday, unless any of you know how I can get a new data packet to work on.

(i.e. Manually download a work packet from their website and place it into the data folder or something like that)

BTW...Thanks so much for all the help so far. I can't wait to see how SETI works with both GPUs and the 4 core processor at the same time.

EDIT: One more thing, I noticed with SETI that it would run all 4 cores of my processor at 100% along with my GPU at 100%. It seems that when I run projects like Milkyway that it used all 4 cores of the processor at 100% but it is not using the GPU's at all. Is there something I can put in my cc_config file to tell all projects I work on to use all 4 cores of my processor and my two GPU's at 100%? Do I need to change a setting somewhere in the Milkyway preferences to use the GPU's? I didn't remember seeing anything on the site.

No, there is no way to manually download work from Seti while they are down. Their upload and downloaded servers are off line.

As for Milkyway, perhaps that you didn't allow the (correct) GPU to be used in your project preferences over there. Else they may not have had GPU work in the feeder at the time your BOINC requested work.

Yea, I checked the settings before I posted here and the GPU setting was enabled. I'll keep an eye on it over time to see if they start using the GPU.

Thanks.

Milkyway does require that your GPU can do double precision math. Neither your GTX460, nor your 8800 is capable. Both are a single precision GPU only. DP cannot be added through drivers, it's built into the hardware.

Think your GTX still does DP? It only does on one of its arithmetic logic unit (ALU):
One place where the GF104's SM is less capable is double-precision math, a facility important to some types of GPU computing but essentially useless for real-time graphics. Nvidia has retained double-precision support for the sake of compatibility, but only one of those 16-wide ALU blocks is DP-capable, and it processes double-precision math at one quarter the usual speed. All told, that means the GF104 is just 1/12 its regular speed for double-precision.

That may not be enough for the MW project to work with. You'll have to ask them on their forums.

Just for my own future reference, which cards handle double precision? From some research on my side it looks like the more workstation geared cards like Quadro FX5800.

In general, are the CAD type of workstation cards like the Quadro FX5800 better for BOINC type projects than a GeForce type gaming card?

I saw your comment about Seti being down, "Seti is off line during Tuesday 9am Berkeley time to Friday 9am Berkeley time"

However, my computers have been trying to upload data to Seti for about 9 days now, and they keep failing.

I keep getting the followin:

9/28/2010 11:46:33 AM SETI@home Sending scheduler request: To report completed tasks.
9/28/2010 11:46:33 AM SETI@home Reporting 5 completed tasks, requesting new tasks
9/28/2010 11:46:36 AM SETI@home Scheduler request failed: Couldn't connect to server

And thats it. I dont have any proxy or anything in between the client and the Internet, and it used to work just fine. I added the Milkyway project to see if it was a connectivity issue, and it has been working fine.

any ideas what is going on.

Also by the way, I have been goign to their site and seeing that they are saying their datase is down (for maintenance) and that was on Monday! so what is going on?

thansk for any help you may office,
j

Hi,
too bad not only SETI had a server problem, but worse - they still have. But even worser... there was some information about in the SETI-Forum which is even down ^^

But . . . .sorry I have to correct the information "ageless" gave here referring to the momentary reachable part of the homepage (while they still struggle to get the servers online. . .)

    So whats the clue? Because of the upload problems last (!) week after the usual delay from Tuesday until friday, the servers were on for some hours. But the upload still did not work. The next message from SETI-Team was, that the server "bruno" ist not capable to store anymore any more data so the are forced to activate - earlier than planed - the new server "bambi". They promised to do that as fast as possible.

    Next official message was, that they have to shut down the servers again on Saturday (hope I remember this correctly) because they already began to work on the new server and transfer the data from "bruno". In this context they also wrote, that in the upcoming week (this one already ^^) there will be no downtime from Tuesday until Friday - in the hope to get the servers to work. So next planed shutdown is first in the upcoming week - from 5th to 8th October.
    Then again the servers were down until now.

To bad the SETI-Forum isn´t online - you could follow the progress of what has happend there.

(umpf - sorry for the strange text here - the last time I wrote so much in a foreign language is . . . 27 years ago)

For server-status look here :
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_status.html

until the servers are on again, no up- or download is possible.

Hope to see you back on SETI

Update (5 mins later): part of the SETI-forum is on again, so you might be interessted to read what happened, here:

Now instead of hijacking a thread that's remotely about Seti, why don't people start their own thread? The news I gave in this thread on the 8th of September was valid at that time. yet if you had read the Project outages thread, you'd be more up-to-date as to what was going on at Seti. That's what that thread is for. (Although some people don't even read anything in it and seem to think it's for asking for help...)
