Is there a way to not even have the screensaver active (to save energy)? I'm on an hp laptop, running Windows 7.

I don't know about Windows 7, but in Windows XP:

Right click on the desktop
Select Properties
Select Screensaver in the popup
Select None in the list of Screensavers.

Almost right. ;-)

In Win7 it's Right click desktop, Personalize->Screen saver->None.
