OK… I will start by saying that this is far from a catastrophic issue.

Currently when one installs a Boinc client on a Windows based machine it also installs a complete copy of the locale directory and file structure. This currently accounts for 37 files and 28 directories using about 1.3mb of storage.

Now, think about this for a second. This is a 99% waste of room. Now multiply it by 2 million users or so. Then also consider that everyone’s virus scanner is probably running through it all periodically and maybe their backup software too. That’s a whole bunch of terabytes of space and billions of cpu cycles that are nothing but waste.

One of the key things that Boinc should closely consider when deploying software or optimizing code is the fact that it has a very big impact on the world. Every cpu cycle wasted is one that the Boinc client will not be using for doing something productive.

Now I’ll climb down from my soap box…
