I have been using BOINC since seti@thome morphed into it years ago. Since that time, I have upgraded my computer many times and BOINC has always 'just worked'. I upgraded to openSUSE 11.2 - KDE 4.3 a few days ago, and now when BOINC Manager starts, it pops a dialog box stating: "The password you have provided is incorrect, please try again.".

I have very scrupulous password policies and use a password manager. But there is not - nor ever has been - an entry for BOINC in my password database and although there are several entries for various BOINC projects - none of them satisfy BOINC manager. So I must have forgotten something basic because it's been years since I have had any issues with BOINC.

Could someone give me detailed instructions on how to start BOINC Manager and attach a project?

Navigate to your BOINC Data directory (var/lib/boinc/ or var/lib/boinc-client/, depending on what package you used and find the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file.
Delete it. Then start BOINC.

Else provide your own password in that file. Edit it with any clear text editor. It'll hold a 32 character random password, delete that line and insert your own password. Don't add a Return at the end.

The "Password is incorrect" error message in BOINC manager is misleading because you can also get that message if the user who owns BOINC manager does not have read permission on gui_rpc_auth.cfg.

That's useful to know. At least you're not bugged by a message telling you to contact the system administrator, that your account needs to be added to the correct user group. :)

I have both ~/BOINC/gui_rpc_auth.cfg and /var/lib/boinc/gui_rpc_auth.cfg - with each having a different 32 bit password.
So I copied the password from /var/lib/boinc to ~/BOINC/gui_rpc_auth.cfg - and it's working now.

I'm running XP SP3, but I'm having the same problem. It doesn't happen everyday. I 'Exit' the manager then 'Restart' it. Sometimes it takes 2-3 times to 'Exit' & 'Restart'. But I would like a fix so I don't lose cycles overnight. I'm running Boinc 6.10.18. I did not find a file 'gui_rpc_auth.cfg'.

It's not the same problem, since you don't have to supply the password yourself. More likely, it's just the BOINC manager too busy with internal tasks to be able to connect to the core client. That often happens if you have plenty of work units in your queue (>1000). To prevent that, you could select "Show active tasks" in the Tasks tab.

But I would like a fix so I don't lose cycles overnight. I'm running Boinc 6.10.18. I did not find a file 'gui_rpc_auth.cfg'.

You probably don't lose any cycles, because the core client (boinc.exe) continues to run. That is, you only lose those that the manager (boincmgr.exe) needs for itself. You could prevent even that by exiting the manager without stopping the core client (exit dialog).

To check the percentage used by each program, you could use the Processes tab of windows task manager and sort it by %CPU usage.
