Hello all,
When I try to install BOINC to run as a service, the installer will only let me do it if my Windows user account name has a password. The installer will tell me that it requires a password, even if my Windows user account does not have a password. As a result, I have to create a an extra dummy account with a password to get the installer to install it as a service. Is there a way around this? Is there some way where it doesn't even need to use a windows user name, but can run as a local service, with log on as Local System?

There is a way to work around this, add a password, install, remove the password I think is the way it goes. But, why would you not want a password on the system account?

I do not want a password on the system account because the computer is used by multiple people--it's a quazi-public computer.

I also found another workaround. After installation, I can go to Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services, right click on BOINC, go to the Log On tab, and tell it to Log on as Local System Account. That way, it requires no log on at all, and the Process tab in the Task Manager shows the User Name as SYSTEM.

So now I can delete my temporary dummy account.

So tell everyone the password, then I can't walk in and steal your computer.

Also, especially for a public computer the root/admin account is a bad one to be using open ... way to easy to screw the pooch ...

However, *I* don't have to live with the consequences ... :)
