Message 27480 - Posted: 18 Sep 2009, 18:03:19 UTC - in response to Message 27476.

Closing this message caused it to re-appear again. So Boinc was still running. Boinc closed fully as detailed above.

This almost sounds as if BOINC starts twice, which also shows in one of your log files. But BOINC has a check to see if it's running already, so usually it'll tell you that a portion of itself is already running and then not continue with the second one.

I'm in chat with the developer at the moment. (Sorry, we fixed a problem on one of my own machines first.. ;-))

Can you test BOINC 6.10.6 and see what that one does?

The developer is a little stomped as well. It could be anything.
If changing to 6.10 doesn't help, let me know. We'll take it off here and into email then as I'll need to explain how to set up a debugger.

Downloaded Boinc V6.10.6 from your link OK.

On trying to install it I got the following message: "Error reading Setup initialization file". Click OK.
This got Program Compatibility Assistant.
"If this program didn't install correctly, try reinstalling using settings that are compatible with this version of Windows.." Reinstalled using recommended settings. Click OK, got the original "Error reading..." message again.

Therefore no go!!

runtime error R6016
- not enough space for thread data

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/d509d9f9%28VS.71%29.aspx says:
"C Run-Time Error R6016

not enough space for thread data

The program did not receive enough memory from the operating system to complete a _beginthread call.

[...]

That combined with BOINC apparently crashing as it loads your CUDA card, ...

The "not enough space for thread data" is at the beginning of the log. Many lines *later*, there is a crash dump from *last year*, running BOINC 6.2.18. So I don't think that error, which happened only once, and one or two years ago, has anything to do with CUDA.

"Error reading Setup initialization file".

it's possible you got a corrupted download. Download the file again but save it to a different location than before. Then try the installation again.

Tried again, but got exactly the same result as detailed in Message 27492.

What about reply from Nicholas?

Message 27498 - Posted: 20 Sep 2009, 0:04:45 UTC - in response to Message 27497.

Since your BOINC startup messages show no progress after the CUDA card is detected, it's reasonably easy to assume BOINC crashes there.

When downloading the file, do you download it completely before starting the installer, or do you use Run As.. from the download option?

But OK, clean out your temporary internet files (delete them). Then download the installer again (whole) and try again.

Message 27501 - Posted: 20 Sep 2009, 8:42:38 UTC - in response to Message 27498.

Deleted temporary internet files. Same problem. When downloading I always save first, into my "Downloads" folder. From there I left double click on the file I want to install.

Would it help if I uninstalled Boinc completely & start again, or would I lose all the results of the projects I use?

Normally, uninstalling BOINC completely doesn't lose you any work.

Can you try to download the installer to a different location? The problem is really that the file didn't download completely, even though it may look like it did. Downloading to a same location as before, even if you deleted the previous file, will not really download it again, but just copy it from a temp (internet) directory. Saving it in a completely different location can fix that.

Deleted Boinc completely & saved V 6.10.6 again, into a new folder.
Guess what! Boinc Client has stopped working AGAIN!
I expect you are getting fed up with all this.
Thanks for your efforts.

No, not getting fed up with this. It's a bit of a conundrum, but still quite interesting. :-)

You know what? Contact me through email on this address (reCAPTCHA protected) and I'll help you further through there. Possibly a bit quicker.

That is... if you aren't getting fed up with this. ;-)

Thanks for your reply.

No, not getting fed up. Just grateful at having someone to help me get back to running my Boinc projects again.

I was just reading this and I want to point out that I have been getting this same error on my HP Laptop running Vista Home Pre. with BOINC 6.6.20 as a service and it is not using the GPU.

In my case it happens maybe once a week or two weeks so I am not to worried about it. Just thought you like to know. Normally I have found that it is sometimes better or more easy to wait for somethings to stop working before you can fix it!

Can you test the latest BOINC 6.10 on that machine, see if you can reproduce the error?
