I currently run an AMD 3000+ 64bit socket 939, with the standard heatsink. Since I run Boinc around 18hrs a day, 7 days a week, would it be worth it for me to upgrade to a better heat sink?

Thanks

Hey Jim - what options did you go for? I recently upgraded the fan/heatsink on one of my machines my nVidia GT6600 GPU to a Zalman aftermarket one (that was a saga... ended up 5mm taller than the case allowed... so ended up putting that in an older machine and back with the stock model :( going to upgrade to a fanless GPU as the noise is driving me batty.
The CPU (AMD Athlon 3000+) doesn't run too hot so I'm a bit wary of attacking the machine (I hate anthing involving thermal paste!) but I've noticed the system temp on the motherboard probe is reporting 60c+ most of the time
Scary how hot these things get. Maybe Intel and AMD should stop the Megahertz race and concentrate on Kelvins for a few months!
Not game to try and watercool a machine just yet...

Intel's upcomming blitz is planning to do just that. They went back to a PIII based core and are stating over ...

So, PROBABLY, the HT will become a thing of the past as it was just a clever way to take advantage of a stalled pipeline. Though, even with a short pipeline if they have the transistors to spare it may be a viable way to milk more performance.

Volcano 7, I have it running on med which shows 4550rpm on Intel active monitor. Box is about 1 foot from me and I can barely hear it, and I fall asleep in my chair all the time and I think the fan sounds lull me to sleep ;o)

sweet! I'll have to have a play. Think the GPU is actually noisier at the moment!
