This is a particular problem with the climateprediction.net project, but it might have implications for similar projects, so I'm asking here.

Whenever hadsm3um_4.12_powerpc-apple-darwin is run, it fails to launch, leaving this in the crash log:

**********

Host Name: nathanhtitanium.technosloth.com
Date/Time: 2005-09-07 00:29:40 -0700
OS Version: 10.3.9 (Build 7W98)
Report Version: 2

Command: hadsm3um_4.12_powerpc-apple-darwin
Path: ../hadsm3um_4.12_powerpc-apple-darwin
Version: ??? (???)
PID: 5916
Thread: Unknown

Link (dyld) error:

dyld: hadsm3um_4.12_powerpc-apple-darwin can't open library: /opt/ibmcmp/lib/libxlsmp.A.dylib (No such file or directory, errno = 2)

libxlsmp.A.dylib does exist in /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/climateprediction.net. I have no such /opt/ibmcmp/lib directory.

When I usually see this error, it means that DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH has not been altered to point to the alternate location for .dylib files to be loaded, and after falling back on the original location of the support library at link time of the app/library (and failing), it spews that kind of error.

Does BOINC set DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH for use by the project executable? None of my other projects (seti, einstein) have downloaded support dylibs.

Sincerely,
Nathan

Other information:

ps -uwwwx has these two entries:

nathanh 794 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?? ZN 31Dec69 0:00.00 (hadsm3um_4.12_po)
nathanh 793 0.0 0.1 39708 1176 ?? SN 6:12PM 0:00.45 hadsm3_4.12_powerpc-apple-darwin 28gx_100125348

These processes hang out even after I tell the BOINC manager to suspend the climateprediction.net project (though it does load another project and start work on it.)

Setting DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH to include /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects/climateprediction.net in ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist avoids the crash log, but the project still fails to do any work, and the processes are stuck the same as before.

The "viz" wrapper, which sets LD_LIBRARY_PATH, does seem to work. I just wish I understood why the rest doesn't.

Does anyone else with Mac OS X have problems with the clientprediction.net project?

Yes, "Tiger" and "Panther" on PowerMac G5 ...

Have not been able to run models for some time. They all client error on me. I suppose I can look in the log files to see if they logged any more specific data ....

Nope does not look like I have any more significant details. Oh, same problems for 4.45 and 4.72 BOINC Clients. So, my suspicion is that it is related to the version of the application.

Figured out this problem. Hiding in the BOINC FAQ for the project (not in the main FAQ) is this gem: http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/quick_faq.php#n You have to install a library if you are an OS X client. There is no warning that this is the case.

Harumph.

That said, after installing this library, there are still problems that cause the work units to abort, so I do not retrieve work units for this project.

It would be as well to post in Mac Q&P of the climateprediction board. The team have just released a new version of the application for Macs but I note one user reports continued problems.

The need for a library install is posted on the site in various places, including the downloads section, and it was a news item in September. But not everyone will have seen these.

Nathan,

I have had problems with the CPDN models crashing on my PowerMac too. To the point where I don't run them anymore.

The problem I seem to have happens when the Mac does some network activity with BOINC. I am not sure, but, the Science App seems to want to do something and BOINC does not respond, so the model dies.

I see the PowerMac going off line when BOINC View loses connection and it shows the Mac as dead (red-x). I am not sure if this is better with the later 5.2.x version and the new model. I am not sure I want to try again ...

Just some food for thought ...
