Occassionally I get a failed download. I have been aborting the task as I do not know what else to do. The most recent project this occured on was Cosmology. I dont recall seeing this problem for any of the major projects such as seti, einstein or rosetta. Possibly milkyway had a failed download, but I know that cosmology has had several.

Usually when BOINC can't download a task it will try and try again until either it downloads normally or you abort downloading the task.

If it's partially downloaded, gone from your Transfer tab but not on your computer, the only way to get the task again is if the project uses the Resend Lost Tasks option. Not all projects use this option as it puts a large overhead on the server and database. I think only Einstein uses it.

Ok - I waited it out and it only took a few minutes before the error disappeared. It seems the task was deleted by the server but I am just guessing as I do not see the named result waiting to run and I do see a client error for the task on the cosmology site.

There are no entries in the transfer tab.

There are three messages about cannot find a file on jyslinux5:
Cosmology@Home 2008-12-19 10:23:19 AM Giving up on download of params_121808_081431_1.ini: file not found

Cosmology@Home 2008-12-22 8:55:00 AM Giving up on download of params_121108_221125_0.ini: file not found

searching thru the messages indicated no results for any of the above named results so they never passed. I also went to the cosmology site and found a number of failed downloads including one work unit that failed to download or find any files at 4 different systems and was then canceled by the server.

While doing this I noticed another red warning (thanks boincview) pop up and then disappear on a win2k system, just like the one I posted about earlier. I noticed the "missing file" had a length of 0. About 20 minutes later I got another directory listing and sure enough, the 0 length file was gone. Server must have delete it.

C:\Program Files\BOINC\projects\www.cosmologyathome.org>dir *.ini

I do not see problems like these on seti, einstein, rosetta, etc. Cosmology seems to have a problem. I wonder if the program started to run while that file was not yet "closed" or downloaded. This might be a symptom of a race condition.

While both of these wu's seem to have been automagically removed, I recall some that never got removed and I had to abort them.

UPDATE: There is a thread on cosmos about parameter files not being found so possibly the problem is bad wu's.

Yes, it definitely looks like a project problem.
