So where's the Macintosh client?

we have no plans to release 6.4 for the Macintosh at this time, because we can't run BOINC CUDA applications on the Mac until NVIDIA makes some changes in their Mac software.

Problems and bugs still in 6.4:

- Cannot install on Domain Controllers.
- Work fetch is bugged. It can happen that one or more cores go dry on work. A fix for this is forthcoming in 6.6
- Other open tickets shown here. (Trac, may need registration and to be logged in to be able to follow the link)

So where's the Macintosh client? - Part II.

Just to clarify the decision not to release a BOINC 6.4 with CUDA for the Macintosh, in more detail.

Charlie Fenton wrote:
When an application has multiple architectures, the Mac OS automatically selects the appropriate one to run. The BOINC client for the Mac has executables for 3 architectures in a single file: PowerPC, 32-bit Intel and 64-bit Intel. Except on a small percentage of Intel Macs (older ones which were built before the Intel Core 2 Duo, and ones using the older OS 10.4) the client runs as a 64-bit executable.

The BOINC client attempts to link dynamically with the NVIDIA CUDA libraries, and if that succeeds it calls into the libraries to determine the type of GPU. But NVIDIA's library only has the 32-bit versions, which the 64-bit BOINC client can't link with. (Of course, the 64-bit client can launch both 64-bit and 32 bit project applications.)

The older Intel Macs, which run the 32-bit client, actually should be able to run the CUDA applications using BOINC 6.5, but of course there are no applications available yet.

There are ways to work around this, but they all add complications. Since NVIDIA has promised to add the 64-bit Mac libraries fairly soon, we've decided to wait for that.

Hi,
I had BOINC data directory in a diferent partition from the BOINC program directory; this option was given in a previous version of BOINC manager and as far as I can tell it can help preventing the loss of the data directory ...

I've installed 6.4.5 on my notebook, cause it has a CUDA GPU (although it is not detectd!) and without any of my saying during the instalation it moved the data directory back to C: drive!

Is this standard or did I do something wrong? (I think I installed everything with default options, but couldn't see an option to change/keep data or program directory location).
Can anyone check this and heklp me put the data directory back to another location?

(I think I installed everything with default options, but couldn't see an option to change/keep data or program directory location).

See this FAQ, third screen in, Advanced button... this enables you to change the default directory paths to anything you like.

It's only available in the installer, so you'll have to uninstall BOINC through Add/Remove programs before installing it again.

As for CUDA, you'll need the correct drivers for your videocard.
If you use Windows Vista, do not install BOINC as a service (protected application execution) as that will stop the GPU from being detected as well.

I know that screen ....
My problem was not to see it during the instalation ...!
Did I miss it?
Is it still there?

I am going to uninstall BOINC and reinstall it again to check and do things realy slowlly!
I'll come back in a few hours with the answer.
Thanks for your help

Well, all good news! :)
Nothing that a new instalation doesn't fix!
I decided to reinstall 6.2.19 (and migrate the DATA directory to the rigth partition!) and then upgrade again to 6.1.45

All went well and the GPU CUDA device was mentioned and activated ...!
It's crushing at full speed ... all I'm missing now is to do the same in the Linux partition
Thanks for your help Ageless

Just upgraded to 6.4.5 and installed intalled with all 3 boxed checked so everyone would be able to control BOINC.

I do this so I am running a Limited user account for XP.

However, I am getting a balloon message from BOINC when I start the Limited User Account saying I need to add this account in order to be able to connect. When I start BOINC/open BOINC it shows no project or nothing.

I try to re-install BOINC but it did the same thing.

How do I add the Limited User Account so that I can use the BOINC Manager?

Using an administrator account, add the limited user account to the boinc_projects and boinc_users groups.

If you're using Windows XP Home, this can be a little awkward, but it's doable if you follow these steps.

I hope that I am not asking a question that has been answered incessantly, but just what do I copy to migrate my data from X:/Program Files/BOINC/lots of stuff to the default data location for 6.4.5? Do I just copy the subcontents of the projects directory, or does the projects directory have to be present as the top level folder in the new location.

Sheesh... Never mind. Apparently 6.4.5 cheerfully migrates your data for you during the install process.

Sigh.

I have a quick question. I was wondering if anyone was having problems with 6.4.5 version of the BOINC Manager causing their computer to lock up if they don't have a NVIDIA graphics card. I have a Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 with an AMD Phenom 2.2 Ghz processor with 3G of RAM, an ATI 3650 HD graphics card with 1G of RAM. My computer would run any BOINC for a few hour to a couple of days then would cause my computer to lock up and I would have to reboot it to get it working again. I was also experiencing this problem with version 6.2.18, I've not had any problems with 6.2.19 so I went back to that version for now.

Thank you for your help,

Warren Rogers

Hi,

I'm having a common problem with BOINC: the screensaver graphics gives a blank screen instead for SETI@home.

1) Yes it is attached, working, set to work all the time, etc. I've used 6.4.5 on my other laptop without issue.

2) Yes I give it plenty of time to load up the graphics, still blank.

3) Yes I have ample resources, hardware, and up to date drivers + directx. The only caveat here is that I have an esoteric NVIDIA card that uses Forceware as the driver instead of a device-specific driver (they haven't put out one for 2 years). However my latest Forceware resolved graphics issues for my computer games, so BOINC shouldn't have trouble with it. I suppose I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

4) When I set BOINC to simple view, it shows the graphics for SETI and says "running, graphics available" so why it doesn't work fullscreen i don't know.

I searched similar posts but other people's issues seem to be ridiculously out of date drivers/directx or they didn't know how to attach a project. I hope the problem isn't that my card is incompatible with 6.4.5...

Ok,

So I had an old laptop lying around collecting so I figured I load a linux OS on it and put it to some use running boinc. My only problem is that no matter what I try I can't install the latest version available for Linux version 6.45. I'm running xubuntu because of the low system resources and how old it is. I'm pretty new using xubuntu so any help with some detail would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

See http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_on_Linux for the general how to, while you can use the Ubuntu link for the more specialized options.
