I should add that I get the following error message:

! Windows could not start the BOINC service on Local Competer.
Eror 1069: The service did not start due to logon failur.

What logon faillure? I made no changes to anytthing to not be able to complete the installation.

Hi,

This error 1069 was discussed here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=2940&nowrap=true#18895

Hope it helps

IF the following discussion is what you mean:

Then you didn't install it as a service. Can be tested by exiting BOINC Manager, if no boinc.exe continues to show in your Task Manager then you didn't install it as a service.

Apropos of nothing, BOINC 6 can be installed as not a service as well. Just go to the Advanced option in the installer and untick the option to install in protected mode. This installs BOINC as is, not a service and needs BOINC manager to start and run BOINC at all times.

In the mean time I have reported your problem to the developers already. I hope you're the only one with this problem. As for what error 1069 is, it means that the password appointed to the service does not match the password 'showing' in the services applet. Usually this happens when you have a service running on a local account system, changed the password for your Windows account, but neglected to adjust it for the service.

This is not the case with BOINC. BOINC 6 has its own password (a randomly generated 32 character key) which the installer puts in place, both for the BOINC accounts and the service.

Talking about BOINC accounts, if you go to Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management->Local users and groups, do you have a boinc_master and boinc_project account in the Users group and a boinc_admins, boinc_projects and boinc_users group in your Groups?

then,
1. I was NOT given an install as a servic as an option.
2. It is either clear where or what is being communicated when "the discussion"
talks about, going to the, "Advanced option in the installer and untick the option to install in protected mode."

or, I simply don't have it; because I can' find it. Once again (as I have many times now) i will go back to the BOINC version 5.10.45 until all this can be figured out.

Is there a nice way to upgrade from 5.10.x to 6.2.14 on Windows? I've tried on a couple of boxes and after long struggles I somehow managed to do it on all but one (reverted to 5.10 on that one). The funny thing is that I can't seem to get it working even if cleanly installed. Any thoughts about that?

[edit] Ah ,yes, I'm running boinc as service (or whatever it's called these days. [/edit]

There really shouldn't be much difficulty.

It can take a long time in the data migration step if you have a large amount of data to move (I had a couple of machines that took a couple of HOURS at this step).

There is a required reboot at the end.

3rd screen in on the installer:

See the Advanced button? Click that to get to:

Or follow How to install BOINC 6 as a service which has all the screen shots with an explanation of what they do/mean.

All this will of course depend on if you use Windows and if so, if it is at least Windows 2000 or above.

Does anyone apart from me think that the 'Customize installation options' step of the installer could confuse many users?

* It isn't clear which option is the service one.

* Users who normally disable the BOINC screensaver could think that if they select the 'Use BOINC Screensaver' option they will then be forced to use the screensaver all the time, slowing down computation.

I wonder whether 'With screensaver option' might be a more accurate and helpful description for this type of install.

I can't but agree. I find the installation process for 6.2 quite confusing, while I consider myself quite advanced user. Specially as it (IMHO needlessly) differs from the one for 5.x quite much.

For example: what's wrong with allowing user to select account under which boinc should run? My guess is that majority of my upgrade problems arise from the fact that the account used is forcibly different and that there's a clash with security permissions between the two.

Good Morning,

Just some more data about installing Version 6.2.14

I tried to install it a week or two ago; had the error; unistalled and went back to the previous version -- without reading the forums - didn't have the time.
Now, I would like to share some supporting data..

Env. : Lenovo Laptop running XP-sp3 with latest additions/patches

I did goto and read about the options - I specifically selected:
"Allow all users on this computer to control BOINC".
On startup - after installing - I got an error message something like:
Unable to logon. Password failure..

Sorry, I didn't get the exact message.

Want me to uninstall current and try 6.2.14 again - to get the message?
