I had to reboot windows (XP Pro) because of a software update to another application. After the reboot the core client service (this is a service install) starts but never starts any boinc applications. The MGR can't connect to the client either. I was running 5.10.35. I uninstalled 5.10.35 and reinstalled 5.10.30 but the problem persists. Any suggestions?

What happens if you stop the service and then run BOINC Manager by hand, will it run BOINC?

What software did update?

Quicktime & iTunes update.

I can't stop the service using the computer management interface (boinc.exe doesn't respond to the request). The only way to stop boinc is to terminate boinc.exe using taskmanager.

With everything stopped if I start boincmgr then boinc starts. Boincmgr reports that it can not connect to boinc and the computer management interface doesn't think the service is started. Both boinc and boincmgr are using 0% cpu. Using TCPVIEW I can see that boinc is not listening on any ports.

So now this is getting strange. I left everything set in this "strange" state. After just over an hour later, processes started to run.

Edit: I was typing this help in the time you posted the above where it started working again... so um... not really necessary to test it. See if you want to.

I can't stop the service using the computer management interface (boinc.exe doesn't respond to the request).

Ah ya, I have that problem when testing BOINC 6, with no solution in sight yet.
Although the inability to stop the service is usually a permission problem, that should be fixed by a reboot.

But OK, let's test a thing or two.
Uninstall BOINC through Add/Remove Programs.
Delete the registry entry for BOINC at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARESpace Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley (delete the whole key).
(You may want to reboot here)
Move your remaining BOINC directory to a new place, like from C:Program FilesBOINC to C:BOINC
Reinstall BOINC pointing the installation to C:BOINC

You can stop the BOINC service through services.msc (Start-.Run, type services.msc and press OK) or through the net stop command (Start->Run, type net stop boinc, press OK. (to restart it, type net start boinc, all small caps)

Has reinstalling BOINC to a different location fixed things?

Before I saw your post, I uninstalled the 5.10.30 client (which after it "woke up" responded to the stop from service.msc). I installed 5.10.35 which detected the level change and and ran the benchmarks. It didn't then start running tasks. So I am back to where I was this morning.

I force boinc to stop (taskmanager terminate) so that I could change the user that the boinc service runs under and have restarted. It is not sitting doing nothing. I plan on leaving it like this to see if it once again starts running all on its own. This is sounding like some strange timing related problem.

If I get it running I think I will drain out all tasks and then experiment.

Once again there was a long delay where boinc.exe was "asleep". It eventually woke up and tasks are running again.

Have you eventually run Ralph's Rosetta_mini task just prior to the stall? Your computers are hidden over there, so I can't find out self.

Ralph Rosetta mini is a possibility. There is one waiting to start now. I think I saw something about this on the alpha list last night. I am monitoring now. I also saw a stall of both the client and the manager after it had been up and running for awhile. Installing 5.10.38 is on the list for this morning.

Fast workaround: make all read-only files in the slots folder tree writable. Boinc is then able to delete them when necessary. Boinc 5.10.38 will attempt to do the same if a delete fails.

Pepo,
Thanks for the suggestion.

Since everything stalled again I took advantage of the stop and went ahead and installed 5.10.38. Everything came up OK after the installation. I will continue to monitor.
