I've just switched over from the "good old" Seti@Home, and installed BOINC 4.45 on Win XP
Installation went OK, I managed to join and run some projects, so far so good: communications, computation, screen saver.

After a reboot, I restarted the BOINC Mgr, and it 'sort of hangs' with the message "connexion à localhost en cours" (connecting to localhost)

I then properly deinstalled/reinstalled BOINC, removing all the project related subdirs, but even then, it does no go any further than "connexion à localhost en cours"

Any clue people ?

Thanks !!

Here is some more information : when starting, the manager is not starting the core client as background process

If I start the client in a shell box (say DOS box), the manager is running ok.

Does this rings any bell, people ?

Thanks !

There are two theories about this problem. One think it is a timing problem and trying to connect again to localhost may help. I personal believe it is mostly a conflict with other programs using the BOINC TCP port 1043.

There are reports about other programs using the BOINC ports and creating the problems you descibed. On my Windows XP (BOINC installed as service) netstat -ao show the ports and the processes using them:

TCP pc-doris:1365 pc-doris:0 LISTENING 3148
TCP pc-doris:1365 localhost:1043 ESTABLISHED 2680
TCP pc-doris:1043 pc-doris:0 LISTENING 2680
TCP pc-doris:1043 localhost:1365 ESTABLISHED 3148

You can check which program is behind a PID with the command:

tasklist /FI "PID eq 3148" /SVC
tasklist /FI "PID eq 2680" /SVC

It can also be a start-up timing problem. Closing the BOINC Manager and reopening it works for me in these cases.

I have also read that on some firewalls, one must specifically enable access for boinc manager, even on 127.0.0.1

Hello Germany !!

You're spot on target :-))

Now I see an important info I should have mentioned before : I'm running on a HP/Compaq laptop, and as I should have remembered, Compaq launches plenty of background processes (Insight Mgmt, they call them...)

One of those processes (webem32sl.exe or something like that) grabs the port 1043 at startup.

I just got rid of that bit of funtionality, and everything is fine now.

Still, there is one more mistery : how did I manage to run BOINC the very first time...

Anyhow, thanks !!
