Hey, I just got Boinc and I've had no end of problems, if someone could help me out I would appreciate it. Problem one, it took me 70 hours to do one unit of work. I know the computer isn't that slow. Problem two, after completing the unit of work I did not get credit for it, and there is no record of the work being done on my manager. Problem 3, I'm running multiple projects and Boinc refuses to switch between them even though I have it set to change every hour. Someone please help me

Hi Fog

First of all, WHICH projects?

Credit can take a while. On cpdn, it's once a day. On other projects, you need to wait for your 'partners' to finish their identical copies, so that the results can be compared.

Problem one, it took me 70 hours to do one unit of work. I know the computer isn't that slow.

I have a Pentium IV 3.0GHz and I took five months to finish a climateprediction workunit. That's not a problem; somebody told me that was actually *fast* compared to the average time that climateprediction work takes. You can't tell if it's slow unless you already have experience on what's the average work length for the projects.

I haven't run SETI in a while, so I don't know how long the workunits are there nowadays.

Problem two, after completing the unit of work I did not get credit for it, and there is no record of the work being done on my manager.

When you complete work and report it back, it disappears from the manager. That's normal.

It may take some time for credit to be granted. Could you give your SETI user ID? Go to Your account and copy the number after "Account number (Used in URLs)".

Problem 3, I'm running multiple projects and Boinc refuses to switch between them even though I have it set to change every hour.

If your computer is already "full" of one project, it won't get work from the rest. Just wait until the queue "drains" a bit. If you have work from more than one project, but it's only running from some, it may be that the deadline is too close. BOINC will try to run that work in order to meet the deadline. The other work will be run later.

But don't even try to understand the whole mechanism of how BOINC chooses what projects to get work from, and what work to run. Too many factors to consider, and there will always be some case where it seems to be doing something unexpected. Leave it alone, watch it do its thing, and have fun :)
