I have noticed couple the titles error message of times when running boinc several hours (+10). When manager cannot connect local host (I assume it's core client) computer isn't doing any computing. Restarting boinc helps to problem. Do you have any idea what is reason of this? I just updated Boinc so can't say about the newest but on 5.10.20 this happened. My OS is Windows Vista and CPU is Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 if that matters.

Thanks for help.

Usually when BOINC Manager reports it cannot connect to localhost (you assume right, that's the core client running on your computer), it's because boinc.exe isn't running. It may have crashed or is otherwise stopped.

Restarting BOINC then helps.

It may have crashed or is otherwise stopped.

And do you have an idea why it does that? I would like to run boinc almost always when my computer is on and that little "bug" disturbs it quite well.

My immediate guess is the Operating System, Vista. It does things differently than the other Windows versions for which BOINC is made. At this moment BOINC is compatible with some versions of Vista, it's not compliant.

If you want a compliant version of BOINC, you will have to wait for BOINC 6.0 to be released in about 2 months time.

Until that time, anything in Vista can crash your BOINC or otherwise stop it from running. What can you do about that, other than report it each time? Not much if you want to continue running Vista.

Ok.. Thanks for info. Now I got what I wanted. So let's look for Boinc 6.0.

Not giving up Vista anymore (now when it almost works properly) :D

+ getting maybe more out of 2 cores with this OS... (or just imaging...)

for that matter any software firewall can cause this loss of connection between the BOINC Manager / Screen-saver and the BOINC core client.

I wonder how a firewall program can deny a discuss of two programs running on the same computer...

And as said the whole thing in here is that core client crashes not only stops communicating with manager.

BOINC communicates between its parts on TCP port 31416. If that port has been blocked, or one of the parts (boinc.exe, boincmgr.exe and boinc.scr) is not allowed to use that port in your firewall software, it won't work.

Of course, the daemon crashing stops all communications dead. ;-)
If BOINC is installed and running as a service, you can tell the service to restart if it crashes. Check the properties of the BOINC service, Recovery tab.

Ok. I assume this means that the whole program won't work and isn't the reason of sudden crashes?

It depends. If the firewall crashes, the Boinc manager will lock up and the Boinc client may eventually crash (and usually kill all it's work units).

Similarly, if you're using dial-up, the same can happen when you are connecting or disconnecting from the internet.

The most likely situations are these:
1) as Jord described : If Boinc isn't running for any reason, then the boinc manager shows 'disconnected'. Obviously the science apps wouldn't be running.
2) If the firewall refuses Boinc permission to open the localhost port. Boinc and the science apps will probably be running.
3) If something else has taken the port first. Boinc and the science apps will probably be running ? (not sure).

If you look in 'task manager', processes tab, does 'boinc.exe' appear? Are the project's applications running? (from your first post I'd presume the answer is 'no', which is why option 1 is the most likely).

Has the PC gone into suspend or hibernation mode before this issue happens?

When the problem appears boinc.exe can't be found in the task manager.

No they aren't.

Usually my pc is in suspend-mode most of the day. It has never crashed when going or startinf from suspend mode. As I said problem appears only when running several (+10) hours.
