The only error I can see is the line saying "Access to reference site failed - check network connection or proxy configuration"

The user told me that he allowed BOINC communications with the Internet in his Firewall settings and he also had shut off his Firewall but BOINC always shows the messages that there is no Internet connection.

He doesn´t use a proxy, and in "Options/connections" no internet connection is shown...

He also tried de/reinstalling BOINC with no succes...

Any ideas what´s wrong?

[edit] BTW - He´s using DSL...

[edit] BTW - He´s using DSL...

How? Through a router with built in firewall perhaps?

The user told me that he allowed BOINC communications with the Internet in his Firewall settings

Let him double check.

TCP ports 80 and 443 must be allowed for BOINC in the firewall. In case he has a hardware firewall as well, in both of them.

If he can browse websites, definitely the hardware firewall isn't blocking it :)

Now, a software firewall is a different story, because it can block depending on what program is trying to do communication (iexplore.exe allowed and boinc.exe disallowed).

Thanks for your replies guys!

Well... The whole thing looks pretty mysterious to me...

He told me again that BOINC is allowed to communicate with the Internet in his Windows Firewall settings. He opened the Ports 80 and 443, but with no success... And he also tried to disable the Windows Firewall with no success...

In the meantime he also tried 5.10.21 but with the same error.

He is using a AVM Fritz!Box SL WLAN which is a Modem/Router combination with built in Firewall. I just downloaded the manual for the router to see if I can tell him how to open these two ports...

We will see if it works...

I agree with Nicolas that if he can post on the internet, or talk to you through any IM/VOIP program, that port 80 is open on the router. Don't completely open it. He may want to try to port forward to his computer, though.

What if he tries an older BOINC client?
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/?C=M;O=D for a list. Skip the 6.0.1 client on there, it's not for users.

Hi!
I am the man with the problem youre discussing about. first thanks for your help!
I tried out your recommendations, but still it doesnt work. I also tried to work with an older version of boinc (5.1.2) but boinc is still not able to communicate with the projects.
I dont know, maybe it isnt important, but some weeks ago mozilla firefox stopped working. It isnt able to connect to the servers too. opera an iexplorer work well. ????
Thanks for your help!

Here comes the weird thing...

He installed 5.1.2 and it seems BOINC is now able to connect to the Internet because he gets the message that his version of BOINC is not supported by the projects he tried to attach to...

He will register in this Forum tomorrow, maybe we can find a way how to get BOINC working on his computer.

Thanks all for your help so far!

Stefan

[edit] Ok - he registered today... ;-)

What if he tries a not so old version, such as 5.4.11, which I think worked OK for a lot of people, for a long time.

Firefox stopping may be a clue. Was this just after an update from Mozilla? Or Microsoft?

Networking is one of my weak areas but...

Can you ping Google from the command line?

start - run
type "cmd" without the quotes and hit enter
at the c prompt
type "ping google.com" without the quotes and hit enter

If you can ping, then you can get out to the internet. If you can ping, could it be a DNS issue?

Just thinking out loud here.
