[quote]Though i've not experienced it myself, passwording works for me, read that switching this protection off would make the screensaver work.

yes u are right, switching off password protection makes it work.
this is unbelievable!
a machine needs pw protection, i will have to go back several releases where it still worked

is there a fix for this bug to be expected?

Nope. The developers say that this is usually caused by a driver problem. So test that first, update your drivers. Of video card, motherboard chipset, etc. Updating DirectX 9.0c to the latest upgrade is also a good thing.

If you set up as a service and use this workaround you may be able to get graphics and use the password option. However ATI drivers do not always load properly until a user is logged in.

i don't use a service
i updated to the newest drivers on all machines (different graphic cards!) i installed the newest activX and still have the problem.
this is definitely a bug and has nothing to do with the drivers or i would not get it on: GeForce, Intel and ATI_graphic cards.

i reverted to an older boinc version and the screensaver works again.

if any developer read this, take it. i am IT Architect and used to be developer myself, so i know what i am talking about.

Hi.

I have the same problem.

Nothing else changed but boinc ( 5.8.16. -> 5.10.28 ) and the screen saver switched to Boinc+text

Waiting on a new version now.

Paulo, what is your installation type, and do you use a password-protected screensaver?

Chuck666, have you tried reinstalling Boinc and selecting the 'service' installation? You'd also need to do the workaround linked to.

PS Try to get the QUOTE tags to balance, it makes the post easier to read :-)

It's a good idea NOT to run the Boinc screensaver if you don't need to, it wastes CPU time and electricity, and makes crashes more likely. Try setting screensaver to 'blank' and power-off after a few minutes instead. That way more CPU cycles go towards Boinc itself. You can still use 'show graphics' to display the work-unit graphics when needed.

Hi.

Yes, I use a password-protected screensaver. That way the cleaning lady dont delete someting while cleaning the desk.

Yes, I know about cycle haste. I use 3 minutes idle to start crunching, 5 to load screensaver and 7 to go blank. So I only get to see the screensaver when I am doing paper work or having a conversation.
Were is the fun off runnig boinc without screensaver ?
With several projects you never know what will come on the screen when you take a brake.

The PC is hipertreading so it crunchs 2 projects at once : Simap and BBC-CPDN in the last days.
Simap dont have graphics so version 5.8.16 always showed BBC-CPDN.
Now it shows Boinc logo and information about the current WU switching projects each time it moves.

I also run version 5.10.28 at home without password and the screensaver works with BBC-CPDN.
I enabled password and it stopped work.
I disabled password and it started work.

To me is a bug with this version.
Not bad enougth to go back to previous versions but in need of corretion.

Thanks,
Paulo

It's a bug and it's not a bug it working without password and not with password... something with process ownerships of the BOINC&Science apps versus Screensaver app as i understand it (that's an explanation I found not on these fora). Don't expect it to be fixed as the 5.10 development cycle is closing and 6.x is going to implement a major refurbishment of the graphics model, amongst. Anyway, it works for me and i'm owner of all the processes v.v. BOINC.

Well, the functionality with screensaver password is broken. but if it is fixed in 6.x i can wait and use the old working version...

To get the screensaver to work with a password you need to install as a service and use this work around. That will work on most systems. ATI video cards often cause problems though, the driver does not seem to completely load unless a user is logged on.

You didn't mention earlier what type of graphics the system has. nVidia, ATI, or Intel? Integrated (motherboard) or card?

If it is a server I'd guess it'd be integrated onto the motherboard.

i tried it out on 3 different machines:
thinkpad laptop: ATI Radeon
Workstation: integrated intel
workstation: nvidia card (not onboard)

The nvidia card should work. The integrated intel has about a 60% chance of working. The ATI card probably will not work.

on the intel it does not work, i tried it out.
on the thinkpad (ATI) it does not either, but here i do not really care as it is my work laptop, so it runs only when i am not working at the desk...
on the nvidia i did not try it yet, but the newest nvidia driver f*cked up the graphic of WoW so i had to go back to my current driver, but i willinstall the november 2007 activeX and try it

Hi chuck666.

I would forget it and return to a previous version wich work or 'live with it' and wait for version 6.

It´s nothing to do with the graphics card but something to do with autorization/security change in Boinc.

I have the problem with an Intel embebed and an ATI Radeon not embebed.

The ATI never gave me a problem. The Intel is a bitch. But thats another story...

Bye,
Paulo
