A few times now, I have come to my Vista, (Business edition), machine and found BOINC was not running. I have to exit and restart BOINCManager. Each time, the last thing it seemed to be doing was getting or sending a file to a project. If I am here, I can do something about it, but last night, it hung at 23:... and I did not see this until 09:... next day so it was idle all night.

I have not seen this on my XP or Linux machines. There is nothing in the event log at those times. Examples...

Did you run successfully with a version earlier than 5.10.20?

No, 5.10.20 was the current version when I got this machine, so it has never run with less.
Vista does not like all the BOINC action in the "program files" directory group, so many got around that by installing to for instance D:BOINC

Mine is in C:Usersawboinc. I am well aware of the Vista paradigm shift, (although MS states that "applications should always have regarded the Program Files tree as read only"), I am porting some of our applications to Vista at the moment...

I'll look at the newer versions.

*** EDIT ***

Just looked, it says 5.10.20 is the current version. I am somewhat dubious of Beta software.

The location of BOINC is not only important on Vista.

In windows networks with roaming users, everything in the user profiles
part of Windows (all NT versions) can cause problems too.

It's also a good idea, to avoid spaces and special characters (especially
ampersand) in the directory base name, wrapper apps might not be able to
handle them.

One is to convince Windows Defender it's okay.

Getting Defender to accept it will not help if the application then does not run properly. Is there any other useful diagnostic trace I can post to get this fixed?

I was thinking of putting Vista onto my new quad I'm building this weekend, but am now somewhat dubious.

I installed it in C:Usersawboinc and connected to Rosetta withinn a few minutes as well. It has run for about a month now, but the problem I report in this thread has happened several times, withn different projects, (machine runs Rosetta, SIMAP and POEM).

No use. I am not using a terminal window - I use the Client Software.

This has just happened again. The BOINCManager window is open, but all the tabs show no data, and after a while, a messagebox appeared saying "BOINC Manager is not able to connect to a BOINC client. Would you like to try to connect again?". I press Yes and the tabs populate again and things start running again.

I restarted the hung BOINC´this morning as I reported earlier. I just found in stdoutgui.txt, a load of trace from that period. It starts with no time stamp just repeated...

As for Vista, still waiting for the WoW.... if i get bored with it and know enough, will put XP pro on probably come SP3 time.

Huh? Still didn't see the Wow? You're on a thread describing it!

Try to run the same as administrator ("run as"), this .scr error sounds like a permission problem.

If that works any better, it would be at least a hint for further changes to be made.

Try to run the same as administrator

Trying that now, although the error posted is when I try to restart the system, not when it hangs in the first place.

Run as administrator didn't help. When IN arrived this morning it had stopped again. I wondered if it was a POEM problem as it seems to be POEM most of the time, but if you think about it, SIMAP has no work, so is not doing any file gets, Rosetta is set for 3 hour crunch, and the POEM wu's are really short, so POEM is doing a lot more file gets then Rosetta, so it is more probable that POEM is a victim then a problem.

This is on a 'normal' install, right? Not a service install?
I ask as the service install can be set to restart automatically when it encounters a failure (Recovery tab in Services.msc, BOINC).

What if you put POEM to NNT for a day? Just testing. Although I am also sure POEM is the victim, as you say it is.

In the mean time I'll think of how to word this in a Trac ticket.

Edit: I made you a Trac ticket, set the milestone to 6.0, but we can change that if you want it to. See ticket 453. (Nicolas will probably change what he thinks I did wrong. ;-))

Bah, maybe I should read the forums before the Trac timeline. Maybe I should have kept it at 6.0, because it's a Vista change; but on the other hand, I think I saw similar crashes in non-Vista installs (it's somewhere on this forum).

That's OK. I was wondering if I should've set it to 5.10. Probably so, but for that most Vista related changes will be in 6.0

@adrianxw .. have you tried another version of BOINC, if only to see if that one does it as well? Any of the versions above .20?

I have switched POEM to "No new..." when it runs out, I'll Suspend it. I have POEM running on other, non-Vista machines without issue.

It is a regular install, although I purposely did not install it in the Program Files tree to avoid any possible virtualisation issues.

I have not run anything other then .20 on the machine. .20 was the "currently recommended" when I got the machine up and running, and was still so when I looked last.

The link to the Trac ticket 403's.

That's because you need to be registered and logged in at Trac to be able to read tickets.

BOINC 5.10.28 is now the recommended version for Windows.
