I have a dual core mac, and can't get einstein at home to use both cores. I think it's not using both becasue the max proc. time is 100% in the preferences which on my computer correlates to only one core all of the time. 200% would be both cores at max. Is this a limitation of einstein@home or am I doing something wrong?

(i have set it to use 2 cores, and i tried to set the proc time to 200%. -didn't work.)

thanks
b

How many workunits do you have on your Task list? A workunit can't use multiple cores. You can, however, run two workunits at the same time.

Thanks Nicolas. But....I can't figure out where to allow two work units at the same time Do i have to put "Get work for next xxx days?" to a higher value? I can't figure it out.
I have tried to run two projects at once, so that each would take a core, and one just sat there waiting for the other one to work. Sorry for asking you a question you or someone else has probably answered somewhere else, I just can't find it by searching through the forums/FAQ's. Thanks!

Wait a moment, you can't set anything to over 100%. 100% means you use any and all CPUs at maximum power, without throttling. Just as the idle timer in Windows would show 100% if you're not using the CPU at all.

So, which BOINC version is this?
Where are you setting the preferences? On the website, or through the preferences menu in BOINC manager?

If on the website, have you saved the changes to the website and did you use Update through BOINC Manager (Projects tab, select Einstein, press Update) after that?
If through BOINC Manager's preferences, did you press OK to save and use the changes?

And how many work units do you actually have in your Tasks tab?

Hello,
I'm on a MacBook pro, running BOINC 5.10.20. I have saved changes to the website and click update the project from the manager. Still - only one task, which will use all of one core, but not both.

It's a Core2Duo T7500 runnin at 2.2. The funny thing is with the Apple activity monitor, you can in fact get 200% proc usage for 2 core, and 400% for 4 core, etc. Techncially, using both cores would be 200% for one task. Weird, I know, but that's how my dual core apps have worked in the past.

I would like to get 2 tasks running at once, but I can't figure out how to force it to do that since it doesn't want to do it on its own.

I'll check back and see if there's anything you want me to add.

Thanks,
Brandon

Probably so, but not in BOINC. There 100% is the maximum. You don't have to try to put anything higher in as it'll default back to 100.

I would like to get 2 tasks running at once, but I can't figure out how to force it to do that since it doesn't want to do it on its own.

Which is why I asked how many tasks you have in your Tasks tab. If there's only one... then you can only run one.

The Tasks tab can be found in the Advanced View, in case you're now running with the Simple View. There's also an option to load additional work in the preferences in the menubar. So go to Advanced view, Advanced, Preferences, Network usage and fill in a higher number than the default for the "additional work buffer". Press OK.

This will make a preferences override file on the computer, which will override any preferences you set through the project website. These preferences are also only used on this computer, not on any others you may have. If you ever want to get rid of these overriding preferences, just go back to the Preferences menu and press Clear.

Preferences set through here take effect immediately.
