Hi all,

I had already boinc running as a service several weeks without any problems. Suddenly boinc did no longer fetch new work nor upload results. When I start the service, it just consistantly is updating client_state.xml in an endless loop.
I tried already using an administrator for running boinc with no success.
But when starting boinc manually from the command line or from boinc manager everything's working fine.

boinc version: 5.10.20
os: win 2003 standard server

Does anybody have a solution for that problem?

Try an uninstall (through add/remove programs) and a reinstall of BOINC.
You can also try to delete the BOINC directory between uninstalling and reinstalling. Make a backup of all your account_*.xml files before you delete the BOINC directory. Then when you have reinstalled BOINC, exit the service, put the account_*.xml files back and restart the service. That way you'll be instantly attached to all projects again.

Do you know what it is updating in client_state.xml?

I did already an uninstall/reinstall both with and without renaming the old boinc directory. I also tried a clean install without using the old settings. Nothing did work. As soon as I attached to BAM again I encountered the same problem.

First the problem ocurred when boinc tried to report a task to rosetta. After disabling rosetta the problem ocurred during a request for new work from predictor@home. The next time I had the problem when connecting to boinsimap. I guess it has nothing to do with the application but with boinc itself when it tries to upload or download something.

I also checked wether there is a problem with the user account running the service. I did not find any problem there. Even when running the service as domain admin it does not work.

Ho, new information that you didn't post about in the first post.

Did you check at the BAM! forums if anyone else has such a problem?

What if you do not attach to BAM!, but just attach to any project out there? Does it still happen? If it doesn't, it's something between BOINC and BAM! and I would like to ask you to report it on the BAM! forums.

When you use an account manager you need to do your attaching and detaching using the account manager. Otherwise when your client contacts the account manager it may detach or attach projects you are not expecting. It sounds like in your case the account manager is detaching all of your projects and leaving BOINC with nothing to do.

Ageless, Keck,

thank you for your reply. I do not think it is related to BAM since

1. I get a lot of work when I start the client manually

2. in some of my scenarios the client did not even try to connect to BAM since it does that only every .. days

3. all of my others computers (8 Win XP, 2 Linux) also are attached to BAM and there is no problem at all

But nevertheless I will check the BAM forums also.

I wonder if you have two installs to different directories. That might be what is happening. If the directory the service is pointing to is empty, and the shortcut points to a directory that has project files. Try searching for "boinc*" and "account_*.xml". Everything found should be in the same directory except "boinc.scr" and there should be only one "boinc.exe", "boincmgr.exe" and "boinccmd.exe".

Thank you all for your suggestions.

I was able to solve the problem by rebooting the server. I was not able to do that during the week. When I rebooted it on saturday the problem disappeared.
