I assume that 5.10.22 will run not only WCG projects but all of my chosen BOINC projects. If this is incorrect, please correct me.

I have not seen a good comparison between 5.10.x and 5.8.16.

I do find that while 5.8.16, installed for single user on a Vista Core 2 Duo machine, starts on logon and runs two projects without intervention from me, 5.10.20 installed on a Vista Core 2 Duo machine will only start without going to the BOINC manager if I install it via the Service route, and then I only saw one process running. On that machine, when I re-installed 5.8.16, I saw two processes running.

So, some of this could stand some explanation in easy to understand language.

If you are running projects other than WCG I would recommend using the standard client. You should be able to run any and all projects with either one, as far as I know the only difference between the WCG 5.10.22 and the standard 5.10.20 is cosmetic. Unfortunately the version history in the wiki is not up to date.

When installing on vista you should change the directory when you install, vista does not like things installed in the program files tree. It is also strongly recommended that you install as a service in vista, it prevents some start up problems that vista causes.

Either version, with any install type, on any OS should run as many tasks as you have CPUs if you allow it in your preferences.

It is in the Change Log thread.

It is possible that 5.10.20 was using the preferences override made by the Advanced->Preferences menu. You could go back there and check what the amount of CPUs is set to. This preferences menu is only available in the 5.10 versions of BOINC, although 5.8 should use any global_prefs_override file it made.

It's worth checking anyway. These preferences are used on that one computer only, whereas the preferences on any project's website are used on all computers that you have attached on that venue.
