It has the same problem as .20 and .13.

"Error 1920,check to make sure you have permissions to install a service"

I check that by successfully reinstalling 5.10.7. This is on XP x64, an AMD Athlon x64 x2 3800+

How did you install it? I mean, did you install it directly on that machine, on its hard drive, or through a network?

Do you have permissions to run the service?
On Windows 2000/XP machines, the Log On field can be checked by right-clicking the service and choosing Properties. Under the Log On tab, you can see which account the service logs on as.

Did you by chance rename the boinc.exe?

Is the RPC service enabled on your machine? The BOINC service depends on the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service being enabled.

I installed it from my hard drive

I already told you I do

I renamed nothing

Yes, it is. Does 5.10.21 have different requirements than 5.10.7?

Who wants help? Is that 1920 error verbatim or a foreign language interpretation as I cannot find it with oogle. One consistent variation is "error 1920.Service BOINC (BOINC) failed to start.
Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."

But the error the original poster had was about installing the service, not starting it. Strange those have the same code...

I am also having trouble on a Windows XP machine with 5.10.20. I tried first installing as a service but this ended with the error "failed to start service" Subsequent uninstall and then install as single user seemed to install but no GUI started. A third attempt has got stuck on "shutting down running instances of BOINC" even though there are none. I noticed on another thread that someone else could not install as a service.

Any ideas?
I am a new user with no previous installs on this machine.

Thanks

David, the error you are getting is an Installshield error. See this link. I asked you those questions as that's what Macrovision, the makers of Installshield these days, say are the causes.

As for 5.10.21 having different needs than .7? Not that I know of. All changes have happened within the client, not in the installer or the way the installer works. It's possible you have a corrupt package, so try to download it again, checking that you got another mirror this time.

Also check that XP didn't get some updates in which may have corrupted/disrupted how the installer works. And re-allow BOINC in your firewall. Last, could you post the complete log from Event Viewer on this error?

Hi Spinningspark,

I moved your post over here from that other thread as it was more in its place here. Now, make sure you have permission to start BOINC as a service. Check if you are the owner, or in the group of people who are allowed to start the service.

Also please post your Event Viewer log on the errors you encountered.

When you installed BOINC, did you check the option that BOINC (Manager) be allowed to start up at Windows logon? For if you do not, BOINC won't start at a reboot of Windows. You have to do that manually, or put a link to boincmgr.exe in your Programs->Startup folder.

And make sure your RPC service is running, in services.msc

No it doesn't. The GUI RPCs used by BOINC don't have anything to do with the Windows service (how would GUI RPCs work in other operating systems otherwise?).

Um, when you check the dependencies of the BOINC service, it shows the RPC service. Or at least, it does so for me.

Ahah - here it is, took a while, but I found it. The link in the e-mail just directed me back to the old thread, not this one.

Here is the log

Did you need me retrieve the error texts as well? Don't know how to do that "en-masse". I can only open one event at a time.

I think I checked start at logon. But even if I didn't I should see BOINC in 'change or remove programs' list shouldn't I ? It's definitely not there now but I didn't check between successive attempts at installing.

I am logged in as Administrator and have the ability to start and stop other services. Don't know how to check whether I have rights for a service that does not exist on my machine yet.

Cheers,

C

Oh yes, I forgot to say the RPC service is definitely running.

They seem to have the same numerical code, so I think even just one of the error texts would help.

It was bedtime over here - couldn't stay awake any longer. I'm back now, here are the texts:

Event ID 11920:
Product: BOINC -- Error 1920.Service BOINC (BOINC) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.

Event ID 11708:
Product: BOINC -- Installation operation failed.

Event ID 11707:
Product: BOINC -- Installation operation completed successfully.

Event ID 11728:
Product: BOINC -- Configuration completed successfully.

The last two messages seem to say that I had it installed yesterday but nothing was ever launched (confirm I had checked launch on exit). Tried to install again this morning. Got the same result (error 1920) when installing as a service but have now succeeded in installing as single user.

Event ID 11920 can be overcome by installing MS04-012.

Event ID 11708:
This event ID can be generated for a number of different reasons, the ones we encountered are listed below:
1) Corrupt user profile
2) Improper permissions to component Services (Windows XP). Go to start run and type in "dcomcnfg" expand Component Services > Computer and go to properties on "My Computer" and modify permissions on "default COM Security" as needed.

If that's all as it should be, it's possible the installer has a problem.
In that case:
In order to get more information about the failure of the installer bring up a cmd and type in:

msiexec.exe /i boinc.msi /l* c:\log file name.txt

It will go through the installer as normal but will create a log file that you can look at.

I'm a bit reluctant to do that. It is dated April 2004 and says it is for XP and XP Service Pack 1. I am on XP Service Pack 2 and use automatic updates so should have it already. I am worried that I might revert subsequent system updates if I did this.

The ID 11708 error I think we can now forget about as a one off as BOINC has now installed (but only as single user) and is processing the project.

Sorry for the confusion. I am not asking for help. I am trying to help you. I have never had a successful installation of the x64 version of BOINC. It goes though the normal install process but fails to start at the last step and I have to cancel the install and reinstall the .7 version which is not x64. I have no firewall running, and make no changes between the installations. I accept all defaults, select the service install and do not install the screensaver.

I have the 32 bit version of 5.10.20 running on another machine ( which has a 64 bit processor but a 32 bit operating system ) maybe I should put that on here. I am not going to jump through hoops trying to make buggy software work and I really don't care what version I am running. I will wait until I see a reccommended version higher than .21 before I try again.

Have a nice day,
David Stites
