I've installed the upgrade to 5.10.20 and now I'm getting "Message from server: Incomplete request received." for all projects (seti@home, einstein & climateprediction)
I'm using W2000, not using screensaver.

Make sure that BOINC is still allowed to communicate through your firewall.

Boinc has no trouble getting through the firewall, it is making contact.
A sample full set of messages:

18/09/2007 8:19:14 PM|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request: To report completed tasks
18/09/2007 8:19:14 PM|SETI@home|Requesting 743040 seconds of new work, and reporting 5 completed tasks
18/09/2007 8:19:19 PM|SETI@home|Scheduler RPC succeeded [server version 511]
18/09/2007 8:19:19 PM|SETI@home|Message from server: Incomplete request received.
18/09/2007 8:19:19 PM|SETI@home|Deferring communication for 27 min 1 sec
18/09/2007 8:19:19 PM|SETI@home|Reason: no work from project

Previous version (which might have been 5.8.15) had no such problems immediately before upgrading boinc. I'd prefer not to have to go back to an old version.

Are you using a direct connection to the internet or a proxy?

I've got a similar problem....running Windows XP Pro.

Upgraded BOINC Manager from 5.10.18 to 5.10.20 and now what happens is:

1) Loading BOINC Manager is "slower" than it has been.
2) There's a brief "flash" of all the project information (that I'm attached to) in the advanced display, and then they all vanish.
3) There's no messages in the message tab
4) Local preferences don't work at all :-(
5) This all happens so fast, that I don't get the chance to suspend anything or prevent network access, so I can't "see" what might be causing this.
6) BOINC Manager refuses to connect to "localhost" - it says it is trying to connect, but doesn't.

I have a hardware firewall, so I doubt it's a Windows problem (but I don't know for sure !), as the WIndows Firewall is "OFF".

Have uninstalled, re-installed 5.10.18, tweaked registry, all to no avail. Someone in the UK BOINC Forum suggested it might be a uFluids.net project issue...

Anyone have any idea?

PS The BOINC "Skype chat" help pages seem to be "stuck", and not showing anyone "online"...

PPS: Why are all these \\ appearing in this msg?

regards

Tim, in your case, check that boinc.exe is still running in Task Manager.
If it is not... are you by chance attached to VTU? I ask as zombie67 has exactly the same problem, he found that BOINC (the daemon) crashes when it finds a non-existing URL in client_state.xml .. in the case of VTU, the URL has changed.

That is a bug. Every time you use a single quote (') or double quote (") the backslashes appear. We are trying to get David thus far to remove some added code in the forum software.

Hi Jord,

If you mean me (as the other poster is a Tim !!), then indeed I was running VTU !!!

Is there a fix? Maybe a tweak to the XML file??

(I'll take a look at the client_state file anyways :-) )

regards and thankx for a timely reply.

Hi Jord,

OK, just checked the client_state.xml and indeed it refers to the old URL.

Visited the old URL in a browser and sure enough there's a re-direct to the new URL.

So, for completeness, the OLD URL is: boinc.vtu.lt/vtuathome

and the NEW URL is: boinc.vgtu.lt/vgtuathome

If anyone else has this issues just open the "client_state.xml" file in Wordpad and do a search and replace on the above URL's and BOINC then works !!

This will then give you the chance to detach from vtu and to re-attach, once they sort themselves out...

Thanks for the help and "pointer" to the problem...!

regards,

Tim

I meant you, yes. ;-)

What zombie has been doing on 4 of his computers so far is remove the entry of VTU from the client_state.xml file, save it, then restart BOINC. That's also a way as then BOINC will store the new URL automatically.

I have pointed this out to the developers, but so far no answer yet.
Perhaps that I can lure you into making a Trac ticket out of it? Since you've got the data in your client_state.xml and logs in your OS to show BOINC choking on it. ;-)

(Trac needs registration).

Hi Jord,

Trac ticket created....

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/ticket/411

I've already heard from one other member of the UK BOINC Team, who has this exact same problem, caused by VTU....

It might well become a bigger issue across the board...

Hope something can be done within the BOINC Manager to prevent this sort of stuff - like an optional "start-up switch" to stop URL scanning, if there's a problem...

regards and thanks for saving my bacon !!

I too am having the "incomplete scheduler request" problem, but on a Mac. I had client 5.8.10 (I think) but ugraded to 5.8.20 hoping it would clear it. It did not. I've not even heard of VTU. This machine is only on Einstein, SETI, Predictor, and Pirates.

FYI,

I had a similar problem after upgrading to 5.10.20 (Windows XP). Uploads were failing as well as the google page check. A network trace showed that the proxy was not allowing me to issue a HTTP POST (not authorized)
I was able to download new work but not upload the results. After 6 pending uploads the program would not download any more new work (rightly so)

I tested that the proxy configuration used was correct by using Spybot S&D to download updates which worked.

I already had 5.10.13 so I installed this (over the top of 5.10.20) and it still did not work.

I downloaded 5.8.16 and installed over the top of 5.10.13 and this DOES WORK.
After waiting while for the CPU benchmark to finish, all the pending uploads were uploaded and new work was downloaded.

ADVICE FOR CORPORATE USERS BEHIND A FIREWALL/PROXY WITH THE SAME ISSUE:
1) Use 5.8.16 - You can install over the top without uninstalling your current version.
2) You need to tick "connect via HTTP proxy server" in menu options Advanced + Options + HTTP Proxy
3) Enter the correct proxy server and port number.
4) IMPORTANT: You need to correctly specify a username (like DOMAIN\UserName) and password. (That's WINDOWS DOMAIN slash and USERNAME)

Hope this helps!

On Windows:

Going forward in version number can be done right over the top.

Going backward in version number requires either first uninstalling the current version through add/remove programs and then installing OR installing the desired version and then running the installer a second time (what happens is that for some reason the exe. files don't get put in the directory when going backwards if you don't uninstall first).
