Message 12439 - Posted: 12 Sep 2007, 15:06:52 UTC

Suddenly, one of my windows XP machines is having a problem with BOINC. When starting BOINC, all the normal startup text shows in the messages tab, showing things like the URLs for all the attached projects. Then a split second later, everything goes blank. The icon in the system tray has the white circle with the red dot in the center, and then I get a pop-up saying "The BOINC manager is not able to connect to the BOINC client. Would you like to try tot connect again?" Clicking on Yes does not do anything, and the message pops up again.

It seems to be working correctly for a split second at start up, and then losing the connection.

I have tried re-running the installer to "repair". I have tried re-running the installer to "remove", and then reinstalling. This is with both 5.10.13, and 5.10.20. No change in results.

Suggestions?

Make sure your firewall didn't start blocking TCP port 31416 all of a sudden.
And check if your gui_rpc_auth.cfg file is still available in the BOINC directory, if it still is only around 1KB and just holds the password that came with it, or the password you provided.

Rebooting the machine will also help at times.

Thanks.

I tried turning off the firewall completely.

My gui_rpc_auth.cfg file is unchanged, and 1k.

I have rebooted many times now (the first thing I try with windows boxes).

Any other suggestions?

Edit: I uninstalled BOINC again, renamed the BOINC folder to something else, then reinstalled BOINC. Works like a charm. So now I need to figure out what is wrong with my BOINC folder. I am attached to about 50 projects, and have lots of work from many of them in progress (quad core). Any ideas?

Does this help? it looks like it is ABC, or whatever BOINC was going to do just after contacting ABC...

Any way to manually remove ABC from the list of attached projects (without starting BOINC), to see if that helps?

To pause/resume tasks hit CTRL-C, to exit hit CTRL-BREAK

Well... in theory, you could start it from the command line and detach that way.

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/BoincCmd

But you're using BAM!. So, my guess is that it won't let you detach.

There is a switch to detach from the AMS.

Or...

How about temporarily reinstalling it as a service? That would let the client start without the manager.

(It's late so I could be talking complete and utter nonsense here too.)

Looks like ABC Beta... and are you using an account manager?

Also, VTU is *gone*. The URL is no longer valid. Could this be causing it?

Yes, I am using BAM.

OK, I'd goto BAM and detach from VTU there, possibly also ABC Beta if needed.

Then start BOINC from the command line and synch with the account manager.
boinc_cmd --acct_mgr_rpc

I think you know how to navigate around in a command line box? :-)

Having done that, test to see if you can restart BM.

I removed abc beta and VTU via BAM. Then:

boinc_cmd is not a recognized command. However, boinccmd is.

boinccmd --acct_mgr_rpc
connect: no error

Still sounds like a firewall problem to me.

Or something that just went wrong with (permissions?) the BOINC directory.
By the way, you can easily recover the work in the old directory. Sorry, I saw the edit a bit late. So if you want to, you can ignore my PM.

But for that you just exit BOINC.
Copy all sub-directories and their files from the old directory to the new one.
Copy over all account_*.xml files.
Copy over client_state.xml

Then restart BOINC in the new directory.

Duh. Have to start the boinc client first. Did that, but then the client quits suddenly too.

The actual errors are scrolling off the buffer. How do I crease the buffer size beyond 999?

The only firewall I have is the one that came with windows, and it is not turned on.

I'll give this a shot.

If it's possible, it's in the properties of the command line window.
But aren't they logged to stderrdae.txt, by chance?

BOINCmgr was logging it in that file, but when running it from the command line, no, nothing was logged. Here is the output when running the mgr:

Difficult to diagnose. Did the other thing work, though?

Nope. Same thing happens. It must be one of those files I copied over that is causing the problem.

At this point, I think I am going to have to just scrap all my WIP, do a fresh install, and fresh attach to all those projects (there were a bunch that aren't on BAM yet).

Thanks for the help.

hold on

Can you email me your client_state.xml file, please?
zip it up first.

elst93 at gmail dot com

(albeit it may be one of the account_*.xml files that's causing this, but I think I can always ask for them later.)

I've seen similar misbehaviour as Zombie does. I'm a bit nicer to BOINC though, only running 2-5 projects per box. And with different GUI (boincview). Symptoms are the same: GUI momentarily shows everything and a moment later nothing.

What I did notice in such episode is that there are maaaany connections done from host that has GUI running to local BOINC client. Most of connections are in FIN_WAIT state. Probably has something to do with refresh interval being set to 10 seconds in GUI.

Restarting BOINC doesn't help, reboot does.

Windows XP or Windows 2003 server mostly.

Have you tried installing 5.10.20?
