I have a system running BOINC on 64-bit CentOS 5. When installing BOINC, I simply went to the download page, downloaded the offered client, and installed.

I recently had a problem with one project. In investigating it, I discovered that I was downloading the 32-bit app for that project. When I go to the download page, I see that it it offers me 5.8.16 for Linux/x86 (and 5.8.16 is what is installed). On the "all versions" page, I see that there is no stable version for 64-bit linux, so I presume this is why my machine ended up with the 32-bit client and app.

Is it likely that running the 32-bit app (from a project which does have a 64-bit app) could result in errors?

Also, I have a system running 64-bit Windows XP Pro. One of the projects I would like to run does not provide a 64-bit Windows app. Could I uninstall the 64-bit BOINC client, install the 32-bit client, and expect to run this project (Einstein@home)successfully?

If you get a 32bit application from the project on a 64bit BOINC client, then that project has updated its server software to the latest version. That version will automatically send a 32bit application to a 64bit client, if no 64bit application is available.

You can run Einstein on a 64bit BOINC, as long as you use this workaround. At one time in the future Einstein will probably update their server software so you no longer need the workaround.

BOINC 5.10.20 is now also the official client on 64bit Windows. See http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php
If you want it on Linux, then it's still the development version. The developers know about this and are trying to update both the 32bit and 64bit Linux versions to a newer Alpha as soon as possible.
