I upgraded my BOINC Manager to v5.10.13 a week or two ago. Since then I have been getting MSVCR80.DLL errors whenever there is a DOS box present.

I am running Windows ME. Running 'COMMAND' to get to DOS, or a DOS app (such as ZTtreeWin) or a DOS window project such as RieselSieve and then moving the mouse over that window results in an MSVCR80.DLL error. When I click on OK, there is another error usually involving a file name that is made up of non-alphanumeric characters (boxes, vertical bars, etc.). I then have to power off and on to get back control.

I can repeatedly recreate this problem when BoincManager is running. I can even suspend the running projects and the problem occurs. It does not seem to matter which projects I have active.

I cannot repeat the problem when BoincManager is not running.

I was running a quite old version of the Boinc Manager before - I cannot remember having upgraded it for many months. (It certainly did not have that buggy circular disk usage display.)

I have been running a variety of Boinc projects on this PC for at least 18 months. It has DirectX v9.0c

Since the problem started, I have installed a virus scanner (GriSoft's AVG) and checked with SpyBot - all clean.

This is my main PC so I am working on it all day doing a variety of things, but typically running Firefox and OpenOffice.org documents. I can reproduce the problem straight after a reboot before running anything else.

Also according BugTrac there is a file of that name in the BOINC install dir http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/ClientSetupLogicWinFileLayout. Possible you have multiple copies of varying versions loitering on your system. Time to clean up and ensure all look at the same dll.

Well done. My first reaction was "it's nothing to do with wine" but you were right in the direction you were pointing me.

MSVCR80.DLL at version 8.0.50727.42 in WINDOWSSYSTEM
MSVCR80.DLL at version 8.0.50727.762 in Program FilesBOINC

I shall go and have a little play deleting the .762 version and re-installing the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)". I'm not quite brave enough to install the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)" just yet since it is supposedly not supported on Windows ME.

Taking care to delete excess .DLLs and uninstalling and installing the two MSVC packages above I learned:

- the 8.0.50727.42 version gives the MSVCR80.DLL error, then the error with extended characters as a file name, then locks up the PC tight.

- the 8.0.50727.762 version gives the MSVCR80.DLL error until you get bored clicking 'OK' and reboot.

However, downgrading Boinc Manager to v5.2.13 (I had an old version I had downloaded ages ago) stops the error happening. I cannot reproduce the problem. That includes with Einstein & SETI graphics display running.

Therefore, it seems to be a problem with the Boinc manager subsequent to v5.2.13

v5.4.11 is OK too.

There's no doubt that the 5.10.13 is in need of the x.762 version. To me it does not hurt to replace the older version in the WindowsSystem directory with it, unless there are other apps that demand a specific revision number.

Since x.762 + Boinc Manager gives me problems, unless I get to the bottom of that, I'm sticking with an older Boinc Manager.

As for downloading, you can get pretty much any historical version there was.

So I have been discovering.

The way I do it is, by looking at the existing download link and change the number in the address bar. I think there is a type listing possibility like http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/.

I have been downloading them from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php which is friendlier.

Suggest you try out 5.4.11 as that was the next stable version release.

We were posting to each other simultaneously. It did. i think that was the version I used to be on.

If that works, go up to 5.8.16.

I have been trying that but with difficulty. I installed it and on rebooting, the PC locked up. If I try to suspend processing, the start it again, Boinc manager locks up.

I think I shall go back to 5.4.11 and stay there.

Some projects set minimum client version requirement. In near future you'd face 6.0.... anything below and you wont have graphics.

The graphics used to be the most important bit for me. Now I don't seem to be bothered any more. (Probably because I still miss After Dark on Windows 3.1)

It's funny - the @Home principle used to be "it'll run on anything - we need the clock cycles". Now with the Boinc system I can see a minimum spec, EULA and everything else coming along. There'll be a few like me who will get left by the wayside, I suspect. With a barrier being raised for me to provide my time and electricity bill - I'll save the planet by turning my PCs off instead!

Thank you for your help - have a beer on me. I was frustrated and annoyed, now I'm a happy bunny.

I don't think we will be obliged to update to boinc v6 in the near future. I certainly hope not. Before the public release of v6 I expect that on cpdn we will have a publicity campaign advising crunchers not to update boinc before they've finished their running climate model, otherwise they'll lose the graphics of that model. Models can last many, many months........

Hi. James here. I am about to make a suggestion that may cost you a little money, but I think it'll solve many problems all at once. It might cause a smal few, but the upgrad will be better than the problems withe Windows ME. The suggestion is to upgrade Windows to XP-SP2 Pro (32-bit) or higher. I had a lot of problems running ME, and returned it to the store for a refund, and went to XP home, but had a lot of problems with it. I contacted Microsoft for an assist. They sent me Win XP-SP2 Pro as a courtesy upgrade to the WinXP Home. I have almost no problems with the OS anymore. I am trying to upgrade my computer with the prospect of getting Win Vista. Don't know if the OS is better than XP-SP Pro (32-bit).Good Luck! Please Note! There may be other ways around the upgrade, but I think you might like the results, and Windows ME is no longer supported by Microsoft as I have been told.

I upgraded my BOINC Manager to v5.10.13 a week or two ago. Since then I have been getting MSVCR80.DLL errors whenever there is a DOS box present.
