(This is with version 5.9.11, on OSX 10.4.9. Running S@H, using alexkan's optimized application)

I regularly have BOINC lock up. During the lock up, CPU usage drops to 0. After about a minute, it resumes with the following error message. Upon resuming, the tasks continue to crunch until complete like normal. FWIW, it does not cause the tasks to abort, or cause validation errors.

Tue May 22 09:43:47 2007||Can't rename client_state_next.xml to client_state.xml; check file and directory permissions
Tue May 22 09:43:47 2007||[error] Couldn't write state file: system rename
Tue May 22 09:44:47 2007|SETI@home|Task 05mr05aa.16368.15714.348568.3.118_6 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file
Tue May 22 09:44:47 2007|SETI@home|If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project.

The last two lines are repeated, once for each task running (8 times total for my machine).

The permissions look correct to me. I have tried resetting with no luck. Any ideas?

Thank you for your report. David Anderson has made a change which we hope will fix this. Please try this again after 5.9.12 is released and let us know if the problem persists.

5.9.12 is not out for the Mac yet, but the change log does not mention this fix. Did it really make it into 5.9.12?

It's in the source code changes, http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/changeset/12720 and well before 5.9.12 came out, so it should be in there. Charlie will probably release the Mac client later today.

It doesn't look like the fix worked...

But now I am beginning to think there are two different problems, maybe not related.

1) BOINC periodically locking up for about a minute at a time. Haven't seen this happen with 5.9.12 yet. But I have only been running it for a little while.

2) "Can't rename client_state_next.xml to client_state.xml"

I'll make a Trac ticket of this problem later on.
(a. after my job interview
b. when I can see something on my monitor as the sun is shining directly in this room and not even squinting helps ;))

Thanks!

Half a day later, and still no locking up with the "Task 05mr05aa.16368.15714.348568.3.118_6 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file" messages.

However, the "Can't rename client_state_next.xml to client_state.xml; check file and directory permissions" continues to happen frequently. Sometimes every few minutes, sometimes as far apart as an hour.

I asked David Anderson to look into this. He wrote:
In 5.9.12 I added code that retries the rename
several times over 5 seconds.
So he has something on his system that's periodically
preventing the rename for > 5 seconds.
I'm not sure what it is, or how to find out.

It seems to not cause a problem other than the error message.

The only thing I can think of at this point is to try running with the standard SETI@home application and see if the problem persists. That will tell us if it is somehow associated with running the optimized version.

Thanks. I'll give it a shot in a few weeks. I am currently in the middle of benchmarking the optimized application.

I have detached from S@H, the setiathome.berkeley.edu folder is empty, yet I am still getting this:

Mon Jul 9 22:34:30 2007||Can't rename client_state_next.xml to client_state.xml; check file and directory permissions
Mon Jul 9 22:34:30 2007||[error] Couldn't write state file: system rename

The problem is not with alexkan's optimized application.

The problem is not with alexkan's optimized application.

I also see this message occasionally. I've put some debugging statements into the code, but have not yet figured out what's causing this. Since it happens only occasionally, debugging this is a slow process.

But I'm still working on it.

Cheers,

Thanks. I just didn't want people thinking this was due to alexkan's app., which is where it was left back at the beginning of june.
