On a couple of computers I'm running 5.9.8 on, when I tried to access the computer all I got was a blank screen. I could bring up the task manager to reboot but that was about all I could do. My computers are set so they don't sleep or hybernate, the drives do not shut down. It has only happened on computers I have 5.9.8 running on.

A one thread wonder to keep all 5.9.x problems in that you find out there. :-)

Running 5.9.11. My dual core laptop running Win XP will not go into standby or hibernate while BOINC is running. Also, my screensave (going blank) does not work either.

5.9.12 is out. Grab that and see if anything changes.

Can you look in sterrdae.txt and see if there are any crash reports? It should start with something like "Engaging BOINC runtime debugger".

I started a Trac ticket for you, but details about your set-up (CPU, RAM, OS, projects) will be necessary. Are you using the screen saver at all? Do you password protect on resume?

If you could create an account for the Trac system and add that information to the ticket, that would be great.

Hi,

I just installed 5.9.12 over my 5.8.16 and I now ran into a problem with my optimised seti application.

25/05/2007 19:59:04||Starting BOINC client version 5.9.12 for windows_intelx86
25/05/2007 19:59:04||log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops
25/05/2007 19:59:04||Libraries: libcurl/7.16.1 OpenSSL/0.9.8e zlib/1.2.3
25/05/2007 19:59:04||Data directory: C:ProgrammeBOINC
25/05/2007 19:59:05|SETI@home|Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform
25/05/2007 19:59:05|SETI@home|[error] State file error: duplicate app version: setiathome_enhanced windows_intelx86 513
25/05/2007 19:59:05|SETI@home|[error] State file error: duplicate app version: setiathome_enhanced windows_intelx86 514
25/05/2007 19:59:05|SETI@home|[error] State file error: duplicate app version: setiathome_enhanced windows_intelx86 515
25/05/2007 19:59:05|SETI@home|[error] State file error: duplicate app version: setiathome_enhanced windows_intelx86 517

Now seti crunches with the standard application 5.12 and is much slower. Is there anything I can do about this, except to revert to 5.8.16?

Check out the Number Crunching forum of Seti. I think I saw someone having a solution there when I strolled by the other day.

well, one of the reasons to post it here was to make the programmers aware of it, and most importantly because seti fora are down at the moment. I guess I'll wait a bit for them to come up again.
thanks for the hint anyway.

If you want the developers to be aware of it, please sign up on Trac and write a new ticket on it. I just checked and I don't see one resembling your error yet.

They don't read the forums here unless we point certain things out to them.

David Anderson is asking you for a log with the <scrsave_debug> flag on.
You will need a cc_config.xml for this. This FAQ shows how to set one up. (Watch out for the asterisks).

Run with the screen saver and the screen saver debug flag on (set to 1).
Let the screen saver run for a couple of minutes, then break in and edit your stdouterr.txt file (in your main BOINC directory). Copy out the part which shows what your screen saver is doing (all of it) and post that in the ticket.

Hi, I've installed 5.9.12 over 5.8.15 a few days ago and noticed a few minor issues. They're very small but I guess you want as much feedback as possible.

I am rumming Win XP SP2, Athlon XP 2200+ 256MB RAM, Voodoo 3 3500TV.
I currently run 3 BOINC projects, SETI, SETI Beta & Rosetta.

1. The BOINC Manager window seems to randomly re-size to the smallest possible size in the top left of the screen. I've seen this before with previous versions, but it seems to happen more frequently with 5.9.12.

2. If I switch between accessible view and the grid view, the column headings become out of alignment with the contents. I have found that this can be fixed by switching to a different tab, then back again.

3. I have also noticed that empty slot folders are deleted, both on installation, and on re-starting BOINC Manager. This is a useful action, I was just surprised to see it happen the first time it happened.

1. Old bug. It's something with what gets written to the registry. I wonder if it's in Trac... But it's one I've never been bitten by. Not sure why. Usually if there's a bug it'll find me.

2. Sure does. Let me take some screen caps and enter it into Trac. Looks like forcing a redraw fixes it. So switching to another tab or application. But not just switching focus (if you have BOINC plus and app that aren't full screen and don't over lap, just switching between BOINC and the app doesn't get the columns back to normal.

3. Yeah for that! At one time I had more than a dozen empty slot directories.

[edit]
Item two is logged to Trac as Ticket #212.

Usually if you exit the BOINC manager (file->exit) it will properly save the size and position. Once you do that this bug will not bite you again. Vista has this problem in a more sever version, it always reverts to the default size and position after a computer restart.

Heh... I've never even had the problem under Vista. :)
But I always exit BOINC before shutting down.

If you're on Vista and do the single user install from a non-administrator account, it will ask for the admin password and apparently install BOINC as the administrator. BOINC will start at the end of the install but if you logout/reboot and then try to restart BOINC, you won't be able to start it because the administrator owns it. You'll have to switch to the administrator account and give the non-administrator user permission for the files in the BOINC directories.

BOINC 5.9.12
eMachines T5226 (with most junkware removed, hardware is completely stock)
Vista Home Ultimate with all updates
1 GB Ram
PD 925
SATA HD
Intel 945G chipset with GMA 950 motherboard video
Running only BOINC (using it to burn in system)
Projects attached: Rosetta, Docking, Spinhenge, Malariacontrol, QMC

BTW, I'm on dial-up and I had problems on all my machines (XP,Vista, Ubuntu 6.10) with uploading large (several MB) files when using the current STABLE 5.8.x client. When it retried the upload, it would usually just sit at 0 % unless the 5.8.x core client was stopped and restarted. That seems to be fixed in 5.9.12 on the windows machines. It still does some retries, but they work. I haven't loaded it on the Ubuntu Linux machine yet.
