Hello,
can I also crunch x86 science applications in the x64 boinc client or is it restricted to only x64 apps?

Currently it only would run x64 apps, unless the project created a x64 platform sending the 32-bit app. There are planned changes to allow the client to get x86 app if the project has no 64-bit app setup, but it's still not more than a plan.

I take that back, it was recently implemented! I think no official release has the fix yet, though. And it still needs changes to the server code, and getting the projects to update. See bugs #80 and #81.
