I have recently switched to Vista Ultimate. I initially installed Boinc (for the climateprediction.net project) for my primary login, and had no problems with it. Because this login became corrupted in such a way that I could not install certain programs from it (I will provide details, if necessary), I had to create a new login to use as my default. I uninstalled Boinc for the old login and reinstalled it under the new login. Everything works until I shut down and/or reboot the computer, when the Boinc manager starts up but the Boinc service doesn't. Doing a repair reinstall fixes the problem, but only until the next reboot. Any ideas?

If you install Boinc outside the c:\program files\ directory, does that help?

Vista's UAC feature prevents a lot of stuff being installed into c:\program files\.

As it happens, I have Boinc installed on its own partition. This makes it easier for my backup program to ignore it.

It appears that the problem may have been connected with the existence of a prior installation in the same place for a different user (even though this installation had been uninstalled). Uninstalling for my current user and then deleting everything on the installation partition and in the Registry which referred to it before reinstalling allowed the installation to work properly and the Boinc service to run again after rebooting without further intervention. There is still a minor issue with a "phantom" tab for the Manager appearing on the taskbar after startup and whenever the screen-saver has kicked in, but I can live with that.
