hi
I have been running boinc w/o being able to display any graphics since I started used my new IBM/T60 laptop.
I am now using 5.8.15 but it was the same issue for 5.8.11 and 5.8.16.
I have a single user install, when I upgrade, I first remove (via add/remove programs) and a couple times I also went as far as renaming the boinc folder.
note that I have been a Seti then boinc user for a couple years now so I am not a complete idiot with this.
I was running fine on my previous laptop and the ONLY thing which has changed is well, just that. the Laptop.
I have the latest LENOVO/ATI display driver and it does support openGL.
what else ?
it's frustrating to crunch the numbers in a blank screen. sometimes, I have the boinc logo bouncing around with the project(s) percentage but nothing else.
any idea ?
thank you

Are you not able to start the graphics via the BOINC manager, too, or is only the screensaver not working? Which projects are you running?
To give you a piece of advice: Forget about the graphics, they're just eating performance.

Climateprediction, Einstein and Seti.
the show graphics for the running task will usually work (I say usually b/c sometimes it's just no doing squat).
thanks for your advice :-) .. sounds a bit like a tech support talking to a mentally impaired user though.

Dow did you install BOINC? When as a shared install, only the person who installed BOINC can see the graphics. When installed as a service, you don't have graphics by default. A work around is needed.

If a single user install, have you waited a couple of seconds before closing the graphics window again?
You do know that it happens that the graphics window starts minimized in the task bar?
Have you updated your DirectX version to the latest available? (9.0c is updated quite regularly)

Jord,
I am updating DirectX (only component I had not upgraded so far :) as we speak.
answer to your question :
- single user install.
- yes and yes (yes, I wait and yes I do know the graphic windows sometimes appears as the small dos like window at the bottom of your screen)
I update this msg after DirectX upg.
thx

OK, I have helped someone with the Ati x1400 Radeon before, also on an IBM T60, but can't remember what caused it in the end. Also can't remember where it was, which is difficult when you know I help on some 10+ forums. ;)

What I did ask the developers now is to add a graphics debug flag for a next alpha version of BOINC. One separate from the screen saver debug flag we have already. So if you don't mind waiting a bit until that flag is available, or until I find where the heck it was I helped the other person, run without graphics for the moment.

Although... does the screen saver work?

I've looked and searched, even Googled. I can't find where I handled the topic before. :(

So let's wait and see if the developers want to add the flag. ;)

Did you mean this one (although not using T60)?

oh btw, I am at version 5.9.9 and well, I am still in the valley of darkness.
