Message 8718 - Posted: 13 Mar 2007, 16:12:34 UTC

Hello,

everytime i try to create an new account e.g. an http://climateprediction.net account, the attach to project wizard ends in an error from the account_finish.php script like this one:

Unable to handle request
missing or bad parameter: auth

Has anybody an idea, what to do?

My BOINC software is version 5.8.15 running under linux.

Thanks in advance.

When trying to attach to CPDN, do you use www.climateprediction.net as the URL? As that's the correct one.

You don't need http:// in front of it.

OK, did you compile the BOINC version yourself or did you download it from the download site? Which Linux version? Did you set BOINC up correctly?

Are you using a firewall or proxy? is it blocking BOINC?
Can you please post the messages from the Messages tab?

I´ve downloaded the new version (had got an older one installed before) from the website. I´ve set up the Boinc client correctly (at least i did not found an error according to your link).

My client is not getting blocked by a firewall. Im using the client for SETI@home and Einstein@home already.

As you can see in the messages, ive tried to add an other project, too.

Actually the original version was closer to being correct, climateprediction.net without the www. Both used to work, but Boinc got stricter about it a few months back and lots of people got 'incorrect URL' messages (and some lost their models when they followed the message's instructions - the message was rephrased as a result).

I doubt BOINC got any stricter about that, my guess is CPDN removed or blocked or did some other strange stuff with the domain name with no www.

I checked the CPDN FAQ before posting that. It points to the Wiki on the Getting started with Climateprediction.net. See step 4. ;)

The change came with Boinc 5.4.9 :

You kick someone to change it in the Wiki then. Or put it right in the FAQs. :)

I have a wiki account, what's the thing needing change? Removing the www from CPDN instructions?

Yes, exactly, that would be great.

The CPDN page hasn't been updated since Paul stopped hosting the wiki (which is before the 5.4.9 problems).

Well, with the Wiki showing it correctly as well (my FAQs were already showing it correctly, somehow... :)), we're nowhere near fixing the problem for stevie. Do you still need the help, stevie? Or has it miraculously fixed itself?

Hey hey hey waaait a minute, account_finish.php is just the place where the user types his name and country on the website, if that fails to show, the account is probably still created correctly ;)

If it happens only on CPDN, it may be they have that script broken. If it always happens (ie. all projects), maybe BOINC fails to send ?auth=stuff to the browser, or the browser doesn't get it from BOINC, or browser doesn't send it to server, or aliens remove it from the address bar.

This is still not critical; account still creates fine. (aliens controlling your computer *is* something to panic about, though)

Many thanks for updating the Wiki :-)

I haven't heard any other reports of difficulties creating accounts at cpdn at the moment (which isn't to say there isn't a problem). The CPDN phpBB forum is a useful place to go for account creation problems, since it isn't tied to a Boinc account.

If Stevie is still having problems then I'll send off a PM to Milo or Carl (or he can do that himself via the phpBB forum if he prefers).

Is Stevie creating a new account, or attaching to an existing account? If creating a new one, does creating one on the website instead, and then attaching to it via the project wizard help?

Just out of curiosity, where is that on CPDN? I couldn't find the link and putting create_account_form.php on the end of the URL used to attach didn't work. Because, I was going to suggest that.

One can always check on http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/home.php if the account creation got through.

Wrong link? It works with my account. ;)

That's why CPDN had problems with the 5.4.9 release and nobody else did - the project is hosted over two sites (OU + Oxford) and three domains, and over time several alternate URLs were accepted and in common use. Along comes an update which both validates it and also doesn't have any mechanism for migrating alternate URLs into the master URL, and *bang*!

One of the reasons I'm not keen on the idea of auto-updating the Boinc manager, particularly for unattended installations.

But going back to the original posting, there was some update work going on with the servers a couple of days ago which may be relevent. The account creation URL is here : http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/create_account_form.php (I couldn't find a link from the main page to it either, but it was mentioned in an old forum post).
