Message 8476 - Posted: 2 Mar 2007, 9:47:34 UTC

I have been trying in vein to run BOINC on some of the PCs at work for weeks now, on different PCs and using versions of BOINC (ranging from 5.4 - to the latest 5.8.15) and i constantly receive the same kind of problem - for months!!!

I can download the new work units (most of the time) so it is not an NTLM authentication problem that i had experienced before (we use an http proxy firewall), but i CANNOT upload ANYTHING at all - it does not work.

Below is a typical log. It is not a problem at "their end" because i have gone home, sync'd my home PC with the MalariaControl.net servers without any problems, but the PCs at work simply cannot do that.

PLEASE can someone help me work through this problem because it is driving me nuts - i currently have hundreds of Pentium 4 3.4ghz dual core machines that i can utilise, if only the software wasn't letting me down :(

Thanks for any help...

Note the http errors - not a very useful error message as far as I am concerned.

I have tried running clients with and without image verification with the same error.

It's not the software that is letting you down, it's the http proxy that they use at your work that is blocking BOINC to go out. So no, none of us can fix your problem. You will have to ask the IT people at work if you can use those computers and if so, that they please open a port for you.

BOINC only uses port 80 which is clearly not blocked because otherwise i would not be able to download any work, so i do not see how this can be the cause, perhaps you could enlighten me Ageless?

'Blocked' isn't the right word, perhaps 'not fully supported' ...

Did you try forcing Boinc to use HTTP 1.0 rather than 1.1? (See the cc_config documentation in Ageless's FAQ).

Yep, BOINC uses port 80 to communicate with the projects (and port 443 to communicate with projects using HTTPS). But your messages also say this:
Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down.

The access to reference site means Boinc could ping www.google.com, so you do have access to the outside. But BOINC may not be enabled in the firewall as a trusted program to go out, so uploads through it are blocked. As I said before, you need to talk to your IT people about this.

If you'd have a firewall on your own computer, I would advise you to make sure BOINC (Boinc.exe) is in your trusted zone. Since the proxy server is the firewall for the network, you need to get Boinc in the trusted zone on the server to allow it to communicate back to the project(s).

I am "IT People"! I just dont have any powers over the proxy firewall, which is Websence Enterprise - so if the site is being blocked then i can find this out by typing in the url and seeing if the standard blocking page "Your organization's Internet use policy restricts access to this web page at this time" appears in my browser.

However, I think it is highly unlikely that this page would be added to the Websense filter because it does not fall into the same category any of the typically blocked sites, such as 'webmail', 'hacking', 'adult' etc.

Can anyone tell me how to find out the url the project uses for work submissions? (i am only trying to work with MalariaControl.net at the moment). I can type this into my browser and see what happens.

None of the PCs in our organisation use software firewalls so that is not a possible explanation.

Thanks for your help so far.

If you look in your BOINC folder, you should see an XML file called something like 'master_malaria....' (I don't know the exact name, as I don't run that project).

If you open that file, somewhere inside it you should find a pair of <scheduler></scheduler> tags. For SETI, it's the only line in the file: for Einstein, it's almost at the bottom of a copy of the home page, just above the footers. For Malaria, ???

The scheduler url between the tags would be a good place to start your research.

Fill it in in a browser and see what it says.

That's the scheduler URL.

http://www.malariacontrol.net/malariacontrol_cgi/file_upload_handler
That's where uploaded files are sent.

Thanks for all your replies - I didnt think it would be as obvious as www.malariacontrol.net where the work is submitted to, i assumed it would be an IP address or something!

Anyway - as i already knew, i can connect to this site no problem, it is not blocked by proxy/firewall/webfilter (see the details that appear in browser below).

So we still have no idea why the reports are not getting back to the project site? Is there anyway we can find out more about this "http error". I assume that the actual error that is being sent back to my machine contains more info but that BOINC interprets all http errors just as "http error", is that correct? Is there any way to check if there is a more specific error message?

Thanks again! :)

Try creating a cc_config.xml file if you don't have one and enable some of the http/transfer debug options. A listing of the options available can be found here.

You've demonstrated that you can connect to the URL using the protocols/authentication used by an ordinary browser, this is not necessarily identical to the protocols/authentication used by a given application. There are many variables left untested. If you change your proxy you'll almost certainly find that things start working, and similarly if you change the protocols/authentication used by Boinc you may also find that it starts working.

Thanks BobCat, i have created the config file below. HTTP 1.0 didnt resolve the problem, but i have a log that hopefully people can help me work though. The problem is, the long is soooo long (46 pages after just 30 seconds - and that is when it is set to not receive new work!).

Examining the log, there seems to be a repeat pattern as BOINC attempts the connection; so I have cut the log from the very beginning down to a couple of repetitions.

<cc_config>
<log_flags>
<file_xfer_debug>1</file_xfer_debug>
<http_debug>1</http_debug>
<http_xfer_debug>1</http_xfer_debug>
<proxy_debug>1</proxy_debug>
</log_flags>
<options>
<http_1_0>1</http_1_0>
</options>
</cc_config>

Examining the error messages in the log - it seems that BOINC is not authenticating with the proxy correctly - either using NTLM or the credentials set in the options on BOINCmgr.

Any ideas people? Thanks [Sorry for massive post!]

Well, let me know, then I will hide the log. You can't edit the post anymore. Editing is only allowed in the first hour.

What I see though is that your proxy doesn't work with HTTP 1.0:

06/03/2007 9:29:27 am||[http_debug] [ID#0] Sent header to server: POST http://www.malariacontrol.net/malariacontrol_cgi/file_upload_handler HTTP/1.0 User-Agent: BOINC client (windows_intelx86 5.8.15) Host: www.malariacontrol.net Pragma: no-cache Accept: */* Accept-Encoding: deflate, gzip Proxy-Connection: Keep-Alive Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded Content-Length: 284

Can you leave a log without the HTTP 1.0 enforcing?

I have a bad suggestion, downgrade to BOINC 4.72 from here and see if it works. I can't use any version above that at work.

4.72 does not attach to projects in the same way as current software and is no longer compatible by the looks of things. It does not recognise my "Account Key".

Any other ideas which other versions might work?
