I have a couple of debian servers that are running the client version 5.2.5 which I'd like to manage from home - either on a mac or linux box.

My home firewall maintains an IPSec connection to my works firewall - so I can see the servers OK.

I can see that the client is running

/usr/bin/boinc_client -redirectio -dir /var/lib/boinc-client -allow_remote_gui_rpc

I can telnet to port 1043 from my home box and get (just by hitting return at the telnet prompt):

<boinc_gui_rpc_reply>
<major_version>5</major_version>
<minor_version>2</minor_version>
<release>5</release>
<unauthorized/>
</boinc_gui_rpc_reply>

So - it looks like the connection is there.

The password is in the file gui_rpc_auth.cfg in the dir /var/lib/boinc-client

But - when trying to attach to the server using boinc manager - it instantly says "Connection failed". Nothing is logged in any file on the client machine. Am currently running the manager on the mac - can't see any logs there either.

Any hints as to what is missing here?

Did you make a remote_hosts.cfg file? See How to control BOINC on remote hosts.
