How can I force BOINC to always work on a specific project if there are workunits available? And then, only if workunits are unavailable or if communication is not possible with the project server, it can work on another project in the meantime.

Will this require some kind of third-party software?

In the Projects tab, set the unwanted projects to: No new tasks.

Of course that will work if I want to babysit BOINC all day. That is not what I want to do. I want it to place the accomplishment of one project as a higher priority above all others, and only work on others when it is unable to get new workunits from the 1st priority project. Is this an unreasonable expectation?

Set your main projects Resource Share to 1000
Set all other projects to 0.0001

That will make your main project download all work units and the others only 1.
Then BOINC will work mainly on the one project, until you approach deadline time of the other results and they'll be crunched quickly.

Of course... you could just forfeit using other projects and increase your cache on the main project to have 10 days of work in cache.

That's what I will probably do once I get some other computers up and running-- just dedicate one box to one project.
