Hello! I cant figure out why I can't install Boinc as a service. Until now I was functionning Boinc as client started in start directory. I wanted to clean a little bit this startup directory by starting soft who can as service, like Boinc. But Boinc Refuse :-(

Everything seem fine when it ask me "service account credentials" on first line there is:
computer name / name administrator
password
password again.

I hit Ok next with no tick on screenblanker and a tick for "launch boinc when loggin". A requester popup: "Setup may need to grant the selected username permission to logon as a service, is it okay to do so. I replay Yes and then install starts. It seems okay untilstatus is "starting service". There, it freez some long seconds and this message appear: error 1920 service boinc (boinc) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services".

The name user entered after the computer name is the one existing on this computer known as computer administrator. So where is my probleme ? Why ? What Can I do ?

Please, help me!

I've never used Boinc in the service mode, but I have read that it requires a real Administrator password - Blank password wont work.

I'll leave it to someone more knowledgeable to explain a work around.

I'm guessing from your question that you are installing BOINC as a service on a Microsoft Operating System. I've used BOINC as a service on 'Windows XP' and 'Windows Server 2003'. This error occurs when the password for the user does not match... meaning you don't have permission to start the service.

Just to go through it step by step from scratch...

Using the "Computer Management" administrative tool, you need to create the user (e.g. 'BOINC') and add this user as a member of the 'Adminstrators' group to give it sufficient privileges. Set the password.

Run the "Local Security Settings" administrative tool. The important setting is "Log on as a service", which should have the BOINC user listed. This is not usually set for regular users and administrators. The installer should do this, but check anyway.

Make sure that the user you are using to run the installer is in the 'Administrators' group. When prompted, enter the username and password that you previously created and set.

For security, you may also want to go back to the "Local Security Settings" tool and add BOINC user to the list of 'Deny Log on Locally', so this username is not available for desktop sessions. You will also probably want to go back to the "Computer Management" tool and set the BOINC user 'User cannot change password' and 'Account never expires' checkboxes.

He wrote that he entered and re-entered his password. No mention of it being blank.
I am having the same issue (error 1920) now with version 5.10.19 (version 5.10.18 ran fine a few minutes ago - just prior to the newer one). To be sure I even rebooted the machine after the first attempt resulted in the same error message ...

The next thing I'll try is to rename the old directory but even if that works would I like to know what is causing the problem.

Well, so much for theory! It failed just the same: after installing the service the attempt to start it failed with said error message: "Error 1920.Service BOINC (BOINC) failed to start system services." I will now disable Panda Titanium and retry.

5.10.19 has issues.

I'd roll back to the latest stable or last alpha until we hear from Rom.

I have a similar problem with Vista, running BOINC as a service, I have entered valid Admin passwords on two machines during the install but after a reboot I get a notification that Windows has blocked a start up program and I have to go in and run the service via the notifications area icon for the blocked program. It doesn't ask for another password or to be run using another administrator's account. I'm running v5.10.20 which was the version provided via the download link on the home page.

I have the same problem. I can't install 5.10.13 or 5.10.20. I am using 5.10.7. This is Windows XP x64 on an Athlonx64 x2 3800+.
