Machine: Ubuntu 16.04
BOINC: 7.9.3(x64)
Project: Seti@Home
wxWidgets: 3.0.3
CPU: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83GHz × 4
GPU: AMD RV730 (DRM 2.43.0 / 4.4.0-116-generic, LLVM 5.0.0)

Last night boinc was working fine. When I looked at the screen it showed it was running 3 processes. This morning the application screen was blank showing only a white interface. No buttons, text, etc. Boinc was still running as and was using the normal amount of CPU. The only thing visible was File Edit View top left of the application. No other menu items were displayed. I clicked File > Quit and clicked "Stop running tasks when exiting the BOINC Manager". CPU usage dropped to almost 0 and then I restarted the application. It came up immediately with an error: Application can not connect to client for 3 min (or similar wording). There is no attached projects. All the buttons under the Project tab are grayed out. You can not attach a new project. Under Tools > Event log there are no event entries. Under /.BOINC there is a file stdoutgui.txt and there is one line: 19-Mar-2018 12:47:19 [---] cc_config.xml not found - using defaults. I did a system wide search and I can not find that I have ever had this file. While typing this the message a different error message came up: The BOINC client has exited unexpectedly 3 times within the last last 3 minutes. Would you like to restart it again? Im not sure what that is referring to as its been on for far longer than 3 min without exiting.

One last thing - I just noticed in the About window while getting the version number that it now says Pre-release. I am now wondering if this is part of a update that happened on Sat with Ubuntu?

Which application did you restart? Just BOINC Manager?
Under Linux, you have to start the client first, then the manager. Here the manager does not start the client, as it does under Windows or OS X.
So now you're just running the manager and it's telling you it cannot connect to a client, because the client isn't running. That's also why all windows are blank.

7.9.3 is a pre-release version of BOINC. All the Major.UNEVEN.revision versions are beta pre-release versions. When the middle value is even, it can be a recommended version.

Under Linux, you have to start the client first

Which on Ubuntu 16.04 is done with

sudo systemctl start boinc-client

Or just reboot.

Are you saying that after all these years when I reboot I have to start the client and manager manually?
Is that a change from the possible update?

Sorry I wasn't being clear. I should have learned by now that one sentence helpful tips usually end up being not so helpful :/

You maybe know already but a quick recap. BOINC is made of multiple parts of which two matter here. BOINC client is a program that runs in background. It downloads tasks and uploads results and takes care of running science applications. BOINC Manager is a GUI program that shows you what the client is doing and allows you to control the client.

When you install BOINC from repository it installs BOINC client as service that is automatically started at boot time. Normally starting and stopping services is something that only root can do. Manager can stop the client even when the client is running as service not because Manager has some special privileges but because Manager tells the client to stop itself. This is what "Stop running tasks when exiting the BOINC Manager" and File -> Shut down connected client do.

Starting the client service with Manager is different. Manager can't start the client service because it isn't running as root and even if you run Manager as root it still won't work because Manager doesn't have any code to start the client service. (Manager tries to start the client as regular application but that fails.)

So, if you manage to shut down the client you need to restart it manually or reboot to have it restarted automatically.

Once you get the client running, and if you find Manager again in this weird state with only white interface and without buttons or anything I would like to see a screenshot of it.

The software updated this morning:
version: 7.10.1(x64)
wxWidgets Version: 3.0.4

I never received notice of your reply so I did not see it until now.
Sorry.

After several restarts Boinc was up and running. I did nothing to cause it.
I did not run the command at the terminal.

After the update this morning - again it will not connect to the client
but at least the interface is there. I have run the start client command.
The error "client has exited unexpectedly 3 times within the last 13
minutes" is coming up repeatedly again. There are no log entries under
log but in the stderrgui.txt file:

... After the update this morning - again it will not connect to the client ...

Try reading this thread. Seems like there is a problem with 7.10.1.

You should go back to 7.9.3 and wait for 7.10.2 before updating again.
Cheers,
Gary.

I guess Boinc forum is not sending out messages on posts.

Gary, I read that link and just applied the update and it is running
fine. Thanks for posting the link.

[slightly off topic]

In order to receive email notifications about new messages on this or any BOINC project message board, you have to have two things in place.

1) You have to 'subcribe' (button above this message list) to each individual thread that you wish to follow
2) You have to choose an appropriate notification frequency in your account's community preferences

If both of those settings are in place, and anyone is still not receiving notifications as expected, please let us know and we'll ask the powers-that-be to investigate.

For testing I subscribed to the "Seti is down Cafe" thread, it spawned a separate subscription forum at the bottom of the forum index and now that someone posted to it, I got an email about that.

BOINC: A user has posted to 'The Seti is Down Cafe'

Another BOINC user has posted to the thread
"The Seti is Down Cafe".

Just adding a note that 7.9.3 is the BOINC version in the Ubuntu 18.04 repository. I found it odd an odd number was in the repository.

I think you must have subscribed to a testing/development repository. We have been working on a new release, and versions 7.9.n have been available recently for testing. We have now moved on to a release candidate 7.10.2 build: if this passes testing, it should become available in the stable production repositories.

Nope, bare bones Ubuntu install. Only repository added was Nvidia PPA. I've seen others grab a 7.9 from a repository as well.
