I just purchased a new computer, a Dell Dimension 9100 with a 3GHz Intel Pentium D, 1 Gig of memory. running XP Pro (Version 2002, service pack 2), Norton, and Wireless network (will be switching to cabled network through a Linksys router when I have finished installing programs on it).

Being a long time Seti@home and Boinc user, one of the first things I installed was BOINC 4.45. The installation seemed good, and the application opens as expected when booting the computer or double clicking the icon or opening it from the program folder.

The problem I run into is when I try to attach a project to BOINC 4.45, the application completely hangs (I can't even kill the task in task manager). I am a member of Seti, Einstein, Predictor and LHC. I tried resintalling the BOINC, and have tried to install Seti, and Einstein (one on each of the installs (just in case there might have been an issue with the program server at the time I installed it)).

Anyone else had this problem, or know of a solution?

I have just turned off Norton Internet Security (because it hung a couple of times after it warned me that the computer was trying to access a remote site on it's own) on the computer and going to redownload BOINC (in case the download was corrupted). If that worked, I will post a new message letting people know.

I would hate to have to leave BOINC just because of a new computer, and I was looking forward to continuing on with the new beast (and helping the science along).

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Tom

Quick update.

Have installed BOINC 4.19, and no problems with installation and adding the projects.

Will try to install 4.45 and see if it works via 'upgrading' versions, or if it still hangs.

The upgrade approach seems to have worked and BOINC is happily running on the computer now on BOINC 4.45.

I do not know why it would not run when I started straight with BOINC 4.45 and instead had to do 4.19 first and upgrade, but I'm happy about with it running now.

Maybe the BOINC experts know of a solution for the problem so that other users do not run into the same thing. Maybe it's a new bug in the latest version of BOINC that will be fixed in a later version.

Note: I have not turned Norton Internet Security back on, so possibly it was the cause. If/when I do turn it back on, I will let folks know if it hangs again.
